what lense for wildlife
on Jan 9, 2014 at 2:57:23 pm

good afternoon to all,

i am thinking to buy the olympus pen e-pl3 especially for video and please i would like to have your advice and comments of what lense is good for wildlife like small birds, owls and beavers among others

i am interested to shoot from a distance of no more than 30-50 meters from very early morning and twilight time

i have found through ebay the pentax smc k-mount 135mm and 70-210mm zoom but i really don't know if those old lenses are really good to shoot hd and sd video

thanks in advance

If you're hunting the second-hand market for manual lenses to use with a converter, there are some useful reviews here: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/
...though read with caution: you'll find a few people describing top end $3000 glass as "rubbish" amongst the positive reviews!
Presumably the converter will negate most of the auto features, so you can probably get a really nice old f2.8-at-both-ends tele zoom without tons of clever electronics (that won't work on your PEN anyway.) The 2x crop factor will beef up a 135mm or 200mm focal length nicely, and a really good lens from a few decades ago is just as good today, as long as it's not damaged or full of fungus...!
I spent a while looking for tele zooms to use with a converter on my GH2, but even the old ones were too much for my budget :-(

I don't know where you're located, but you might want to try renting a lens before you purchase - in my area (New England, US) there are quite a few choices which will ship a lens to you. Here's a good link on lens compatibility for Olympus:

good afternoon from greece dear Joe and i thank you so much for your kind reply

i live just outside athens in a mountainous area with a great wild life

no, i do not have any option to rent or try any of the lenses i am interested to buy for my olympus pen e-pl3 and my only choice is to rely on creative cow's member advice and reviews from some sites i trust like dpreview

personally i have a very good experience from pentax smc lenses that i currently have but i don't know if those lenses have also good quality with hd and sd video

i am looking to buy the pentax 135mm and 70-210mm zoom but i don't know if those lenses are good for wild life

thanks

Hi Kathreen -

Sorry there are no rental options in the Athens area. Here's a good general guide for lenses good for shooting wildlife:
