Nikon D7100 - Video settings - need advice
on Apr 28, 2013 at 4:19:08 am

Just got my new D7100 today. Video looks great but a bit jerky. I tried to force fixed shutter speed in P mode but got confused by camera behavior. I'm new to DSLR video. Can somebody share video settings and modes to use? Manual is very vague.

  • 30p Video is not very smooth, much more jerky than 30p video from my HDV prosumer camcorder set in in 1/60 shutter speed. Any solutions?

  • What exposure settings to use in manual mode? 1/60 and whatever aperture required? Can ISO be adjusted live or has to be fixed?

  • What auto mode to use for best video when auto is needed? When set to S shutter displayed in live view jumps all the time, so not sure what's happening, shouldn't it stay the same? What shutter speed will give me smoothest video and how to force is on automatic mode so the shutter is fixed and ISO is adjusted automatically (aperture is not adjustable during shoot, I know)?

  • What picture settings to use for video that will be graded and edited?
  • What picture settings to use for family-type video that just needs to be the best out of the box ("cinema" look not required).

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Update: I just confirmed a very strange bug! I did some shooting today outdoors in the bright light and in the S (shutter priority mode) with shutter set to 60 as soon as switch to video live view, shutter drops to 30 and stays that way no matter what I do. It does not respond to any dials etc. Obviously camera can't change aperture, so it changes ISO to keep good exposure. But I can's set shutter to 60 in any other mode but full Manual (M). The camera always drops shutter to 30. Why??? Note that if I switch to Photo Live View (not video) then shutter stays 60 and is also fully changeable by command dial.

I can't explain it by anything but a weird bug. I would be OK if it fixes the sutter to one value, but it should at least be the best suitable value (60 for 30p video)! Or user-editable. Instead it drips it to 30 even in bright light. It's not just not optimal setting, but also makes even harder to use wider aperture as there's just too much light at shutter 30. It forces to use manual mode, but with no metering I can't even properly change it during recording, because it's hard to see in a bright light if your exposure is OK and there is no meter to tell you otherwise. Any ideas about how to solve it?

I own a D7000, but this may help.

I always use manual mode. Shoot a still to check exposure with the histogram, then change to live view, then shoot the video.

To adjust your exposure in very bright light (the sun) and keep the 1/60 speed try using an ND filter so you can get a shallow deep of field when needed.

It's reccomended to shoot with a flat mode and fix any color and contrast in post. Here's the mode I use: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30153818/TassinFlat%2BLUT.zip

The camera has some limitation, just remember it's not a camcorder. I hope this helps.

Thanks. Can you actually list your settings? I don't think I should attempt to load d7000 file into d7100...

It has almost everything at neutral 0 (I don't have the camera with me), but the color curve was made inside the Nikon software and can't be replicated with the camera controls (you need to recreate it in your PC).

I think Nikon don't include a real superflat option to avoid noise and washed blacks.

I hope this helps

Forgot to ask: by "0" do you mean neutral position (center) or extreme left position - in the negative range for most sliders there?

All neutral at center. In the vimeo link I shared the creator of the curve says that he uses sRGB curve with -1 saturation. I had adobeRGB with 0 sat and worked fine for me, but you may do some tests and adjust the spects to fit your personal taste.

Control the light coming into the camera by using a variable ND filter and ensure you keep your settings as suggested in your other replies. I know in the pal setting I get smoother footage with my shutter speed set to 100 than I do on 50. You have a great little camera there, enjoy it.

1/100? That's interesting, I'll have to try that. Frankly I haven't noticed drastic difference between 30-125 range, but I need to test methodically to see if there is one.

I just got my new D7100.

And noticed the 25p is jerky when played directly from the cam's HDMI into my Samsung TV. The tv says it's 1080 60i. So that's the camera output and not the video file.
Video taken with 30p displays correctly.
In Premiere pro the mov files 24 25 30 are jerky to.
My small Sony 25p AVCHD files playback "smooth" in premiere.

So I didn't answer your question, but just to let you no I'm struggling here too.

So maybe after a few more days experimenting i'll be able to help.

I see what you mean. Let me know what you come up with. Just in case - what shutter are you using? It shold be not higher than 60. Anything above will surely get you the jerky motion.
