Hi,

I have a rookie question. I shoot full resolution, 24p with my Canon DSLR and when I import to the system it sees it as 23.98p. Why does this happen and also do I want my project 24p or 23.98p afterwards?

Well I have a couple of thoughts:

1. In my Canon User Manual it says that when you select 24p it will actually be recorded at 23.976 - so they are just rounding up.

2. In terms of bringing clips into Final Cut Pro - I believe what FCP is doing is creating the project at 24.98 when you allow it to automatically create a sequence based upon the clip's format. So they are also rounding up.

This slight difference has never bothered me - no one will ever be able to tell the difference but you could always manually adjust the timeline to 24.000 fps and FCP will render the clip into that format for you.

24.00 is more troublesome in an NTSC world of 29.97. The difference between 24 and 23.976 is the same as 30 and 29.97 (FPS x (1000/1001))

That is why the rate is 23.976 - it also allows for continuous 2>3 cadence when going out to 29.97 formats.

In PAL based countries, it will be 24.00 and 25.00 as they don't have the fractional frame rates as NTSC based countries.

Stay 23.976...

Michael
