DSLR choice!!! Planning on buying today!!! opinions please :)
on Dec 28, 2012 at 7:51:45 pm

Hi everyone,
Ive posted on another forum that I regularly use (as well as this one!)

I'm a semi-pro wedding videographer. I currently use a Panasonic camcorder (HDC TM900) and I usually use my dads Canon 500D.

The camcorder records in 1080P 50fps but the canon only achieves 50 fps in 720.

I am now buying my own DSLR and would love 50fps 1080 as an option.. but its not 100% the end of the world if i dont get it..

Anyway I've been looking at the
-Sony a65 (but apparently its not available across all of Calgary, where im living for 2 years)

Now looking between the:
-Sony a57
-Canon T4i (650D)

Ive read many + and -ves between the two and im REALLY confused and need a hand and opinion from some people "in the biz"

Ive also been led to believe that there are issues working with the Sony files in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5??

Thanks for any help, I'm quite stressed as I want to buy the slr in the sales now on, but ive got completely confused between the two options.

I would really like the fast AF during video on the sony + the 50fps and even the inbuilt IS...
However I'm generally a Canon fan, and I know i can work with canon files in Premiere!!!!
Thanks for reading :)

Glenn

ps. I do like the silence for the 18-135mm STM on the canon, however im really not that stressed as I use external mics, and never rely on the inbuilt mic :)

Look at the Panasonic GH3, they also introduced fast f2.8 constant aperture zooms to complement this camera, at this point in time, I own a Canon 60D & 7D, I would seriously consider the Panasonic for HD video, but I have a lot of money tied up in glass...so I'm staying with Canon bodies till a working powered adapter is available like the Metabones for EOS to E mount, When that's available in EOS to M4/3 I'll be getting a GH3.

thanks malcolm, but its a bit out of my budget and although i like the GH3, im nt as much a fan of the GH2.

Do you have any ideas/opinions about the use of the aVCHD of the sony in premiere?

Sorry, only use Vegas Pro 11, never touched Adobe Premiere, go to their chat board for more info.

Buying gear is always an issue of price/performance, I bought my first camera and lenses before the GH2, so Canon was the obvious pick for me. Today, with the new lenses offered by Panasonic, and the great performance of the GH2 and now the GH3, I would seriously consider it. Higher bit rate, longer record times, good image, no mirror, ability to mount PL glass, Leica M & R glass, virtually any SLR glass, and in crop mode, 16mm film zoom lenses and primes C-mount, a lot of capability for around $1k. If Panasonic get's their act together and takes the M4/3 mount seriously with a good camcorder, AF200? that actually is 10 bit, and not just "simulated" then the M4/3 system woudld be a good kit. Sony seems to be on this path with the E-mount, they are developing cameras and camcorders so all take the same mount, a very good idea.

Go for the Canon. Its video ability is tried and tested. Premiere can handle AVCHD just as easily as H.264.

thanks sareesh.
I appreciate ur comment, but i was disappointed with the AF during video with the canon.
I wont really be using it much i guess, as I manual focus, but its always a nice extra.
It's a pity it doesnt ahve 1080P 50fps either!

Do you have any opinion about those factors?

ok fine ive decided on the Canon.

Hopefully Magic Lantern will come to the T4i soon as I really really want focus peaking, will help lots!

As for the other issue... which lens should i get now?
I ahve about a $900 budget.
Was thinking the 18-135 lens, other options here:

plz do High ISO Test in low Lights on Same Lens size. frame, Aperture with canon t2i vs gh2
because i have budget for buying canon 60d or gh2 ...
i just want to know the video performance in high ISO in Low Lights
(Canon t2i/t3i/550d/600d video quality is same as canon 60d)

because i will be shooting some documentaries in which i wont be able to carry lights with me, so i have to rely on high speed f1.4 50mm lenses & high ISO in low light conditions...

i only have budget to buy some lenses with Panasonic gh2 or Canon 60d

i can't afford 5d mark2, 5d mark3 or canon 6d for now.

so please show me test between 60d vs gh2 hacked only

waiting for your generous response

Hi,
I would say the GH2.
The GH2's 720p 60p, even un hacked, looks better than any canon cameras in 1080p. So hacked it could look even better !
And if you had to choose in between the a57 and a65, take the a57.
It's cheaper and it has better low-light performance.
I've hesitated as well, but I went for the GH2, and I don't regret it !
As for the autofocus, it's about the same.
Look ar my own post :

Hope it helped !

You might as well get a Canon 550D. Excellent video and save some money.
