Best software for constant folder sync (remote)

I am looking for reliable software that will perform a constant sync (similar to how dropbox, google drive performs). This is opposed to the way Carbon Cloner or Chronosync works.

I wish to keep two folders in sync on remote macs (ssh, one master, one slave) but the nature of the project means that syncs need to be happening constantly rather than scheduled clones, ie similar as to how dropbox works.

I have found a few options but I thought I would check the excellent knowledge of the CatDV forum in case anyone has real world experience with them.

I'm using Dropbox itself. Been doing it for years with shared Dropbox folders. It's worked better than anything else and because it uses file "slices" it's much faster than just about anything else. I'm even using it to sync editing files among users on the LAN as well as remotely. Stuff that's normally not possible except with very expensive solutions. You can ping me offline if you want more details.

This depends on the file type and data size, obviously.

I have used commercial services for proxy sync before in small shops but it can obviously get expensive. (Tip: SugarSync lets you specify any folder to sync, unlike Dropbox and you can do a terrabyte for $550 per year.)

If it's got to be big and enterprise ready, check out StorageDNA. We talk about their LTO here but they do WAN sync and it's rock solid and also accelerated (think like a constant super fast Aspera sync.)

There's a client here in LA getting their XDCAM dailies from Nova Scotia over the internet. Several hundred gigs a day. I didn't believe it until I saw it.

I've been experimenting with Transporter from Connected Data. It's not bad when connected locally. It was extremely easy to setup in my own environment. At the studio where it's controlled by the evil "IT department," (no, non, nein) it has to be setup through the firewall which really slowed it down. I have two 2T units and it lets me automatically keep offsite copies of large files. It works fine for some things, but for other's it's just too slow.

Many thanks for the storage DNA link, I will look into this. The XDCAM workflow you mention is similar to what I am eventually trying to achieve.

One more possibility is File Catalyst.

File Catalyst rocks.

I haven't seen their sync stuff, I always thought it was just to send and receive files.

Matt, can you link us to some info on their synchronization product?

They do not really have a dedicated page to this feature but here is a page that talks little about the shared client features and hot folders which accommodates synching.

Have any of you ever tried "Bittorrent Sync"? Any comments or thoughts about it?
