Web Client issues
on Nov 11, 2013 at 2:15:10 pm

Dear folks,

After installing Web client... we thought that would be paradise but, instead, we've just found some new issues to solve. I hope you guys can help us with some tips.

- We can't play anything back with web client, although QT browser plugin is already installed (only poster frame is available, no play back buttons).
- We can't make advanced queries or search by user defined fields (which actually is the most important thing, otherwise searches results are extremely large and non useful).
- Also, we can't access to our customized Details panel. This is essential to us -otherwise the logging work done so far is not profitable for other users.

Any help? Many thanks!

P.S. We just upgraded to server 6.7. and now we'll do it to 6.7b3 since after reading previous posts here in creative Cow, this newer version seems to fix this problem, is it true?

Which browser are you using? Safari seems to have issues. Test with firefox.

There are a lot more features for the web client in version 6.8.

We use firefox.

6.8 server needs our client to be updated to cat dv pro 10.... and it will take more time. Which are these features by the way? So maybe we can think it over.

Thank you for your quick response :)

New in Server 6.8 http://www.squarebox.com/server68-manual-new-features/

CatDV Server 6.8 has the following new features:

Embedded Tomcat web server for use by Web Client, Live HTML Publisher, Adobe Premiere Plug-In Panel and by new REST web services API. Having an embedded server greatly simplifies installation as it is no longer necessary to download and install Tomcat separately.

Inclusion of sample customisable web applications using the new REST API. These require a Web Client license so you can either use the built-in web application or develop your own custom interface. Note that any license restriction on number of concurrent sessions apply to your web apps also, you are not permitted to “multiplex” connections so that multiple clients can connect at the same time sharing a single web session or connection to the database.

Changes to the control panel to support the embedded web server
Beta support for an embedded Java database server “H2″. This is a high performance, lightweight database which doesn’t require installation or a separate server but does not provide the administration tools and robustness of MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server.

The release notes and installation guide are now available online in web form. Documentation on the Web Client and the older Live HTML Publisher components are now provided separately.

But are these features affecting directly to web client, then? I will pass them on to our IT team to think about upgrading the system.
Thank you again

You raise a number of issues:

1. Playback issues are almost always caused by missing web proxies or path mappings not set up to point to them. You will need to create appropriate proxy media, which means low-ish bandwidth and Fast Start (for QuickTime) or Streaming for H.264. You also need to set up path mappings in the Server Control Panel to point to them

2. Querying on user fields is not supported in 6.8 but will be supported in 6.9 which has just started beta testing.

3. The Web Client can use custom details panels, but it is an optional feature referred to as "Customisable UI". Also check the settings in Web Client tab of the Server Config screen in the Control Panel to control where it picks up the panel definitions from.

Hi,

1. We have web proxies. The problem is there is not a visible player on the screen.

"Querying on user fields is not supported in 6.8 but will be supported in 6.9 which has just started beta testing."

2. Ok, then we stay with 6.7. and will upgrade directly to 6.9 when launched.

"The Web Client can use custom details panels, but it is an optional feature referred to as "Customisable UI". Also check the settings in Web Client tab of the Server Config screen in the Control Panel to control where it picks up the panel definitions from."

3. We doublechecked it before but customisable UI was not available, and so we thought we might need an upgrade of the server to 6.7b3 or further.

If the server can't find an appropriate proxy then the Web Client will not show the player control - it will just show the poster image.

If you double click on the CatDV Logo at the top left of the Web Client it will dump some diagnostic information including where it is looking for the proxies and if it can read the directory.

Thank you for the information. It seems it is pointing to our server, but good to know that about player control. I will check it again just in case.

Hi,

Just to tell you that it is finally working. The reason of what was going on is the following:

We have been working with external drives until we got a shared server, so all the past archive was located within individual root letters folders (such as L:, J: etc) instead of UNC. Now I am reordering the proxies manually to the Proxies root while deleting the Letter folder. Then, relocating originals from CATDV client and it automatically reads proxy location.

Thank you all for the tips!

C.
