Playback frame rate vs. Video format
on Mar 13, 2018 at 1:14:13 pm

When I drop, say, a 30p clip onto a timeline, the timeline playback correctly says 29.97p, but the Video Format says 1080PsF 23.976. It plays back correctly, and if I change it to 1080p 29.97 it plays a little fast.

Why is that, and should I keep it at 23.97?

If your timeline and footage have different frame rates the footage will either add or drop frames with a certain cadence to try and keep the edited footage length the same. So if you have a 25fps timeline and edit in a second of 50fps footage the footage will drop every other frame and still be a second in length. If you change the footage frame rate it will also change length of the clip. So a 1 second clip in 50fps would be 2 seconds if you interpret the frame rate to 25.

But the problem, Tero, and this seems to have just started, is that if I leave it at 23.97, which it defaults to, it plays back smoothly, but if I change it to 29.97, which is the actual framerate of the clip, it plays back a bit speeded up. Again, the timeline is 29.97 but the "video format" defaults to 23.97. It's the video format setting that I'm changing, not the timeline framerate.

I just did another "project" consisting of two clips. One renders smoothly, the other has a stuttering movement to it, but both were shot with the same settings.

Are you talking about the video format under the video monitoring options? Because that will affect only the monitoring and it should be set to match your timeline. It's basically doing the same thing in real time but only for the monitor that's connected by the I/O card.

Yes. It defaults to 23.976 no matter what the framerate is of my clip.

Yeah it is one of those things you need to set yourself as you can have different monitoring resolution/frame rate from your timeline. If you're not using a Decklink to output that setting doesn't do anything.

Oh so if I'm not using Decklink, which I'm not, it doesn't really matter what that's set at. Thanks, Tero.
