Question about Resolve generated LUTs
on Mar 8, 2018 at 3:32:23 am

I've created some really nice color grades lately and saved them as LUTs inside Resolve. I was just wondering, I have my sharpness turned all the way down in camera, and then add some in post. It's included in the LUT that I create, and the LUT, when applied to another clip, seems to sharpen the clip exactly as expected. However, the blur/sharp tool in Resolve is still at 50, or default.

Am I in fact saving a sharpness setting inside the LUT when I sharpen before saving the LUT? And the same is true for just about any other setting, like curves. They all stay at default settings even after I apply the LUT. Is that the case?

When you apply a LUT it will not show you the change it does in your tool values.

As much as a LUT is calling up particular settings, you have no control over them, so you can't really see what is going on behind the curtain.

Thanks, guys. I seemed to remember during my "create a LUT in Photoshop" phase that there were certain settings that were not saved in the LUT, hence my confusion. Cheers!

A LUT is a conversion matrix from one value to another and it will hold overall color changes to an image. It won't keep masks, sharpen/blur, effects (that don't affect colors) and other tools that don't actually change the values of the colors.

If you don't need to use your grades outside Resolve you can save a still to your gallery and that will have the node tree with everything you've done.

I tried that but when I dragged the still to an uncorrected clip I'd get that red NOT ALLOWED!!! circle. If I want to keep the node structure I just click on a clip and then double click the clip that already has the corrections. If I can't use the stills from one timeline or project to another what's the point?

You should probably... read the manual?-)

No need. I tried it again and this time it took. But I'm sure you appreciate the opportunity I give you to take a refresher course 😉
Cheers, Tero!

btw, this is really strange. Just out of curiosity I googled your name to get an idea of what the guy who's been so helpful to me looks like, and for some reason 5 of the first 6 pictures that come up are of me. Can I get a WTF, please!

[Duke Sweden] "No need. I tried it again and this time it took. "

My point was more on the "If I can't use the stills from one timeline or project to another what's the point?" because this is a thing. Search Powergrade in the manual.

I did get your point, Tero. That's what I managed to get working yesterday. Thanks again, as always!
