Dailies in Resolve - mixing footage
on Aug 2, 2017 at 3:22:06 pm

Hi All,

Question from newbie to DVR.

I’m about to prep dailies for a documentary project. Most of the footage was shot in HD 1920 x 1080. Dramatized elements were shot in 4k.

The question is - do I need to set up a DVR project that matches the source footage when making dailies, or can I just import all the camera footage (HD and 4k) into one Resolve project with the Master Project Settings set to HD?

DVR 12.5. I’ll be exporting the clips to ProRes 720x576 (25fps Pal) for the offline edit in FCP.

Cheers,

Neal

Yes you can. There are settings in Resolve that will respond to different resolution imports in different ways; re-scale, crop, fit, and so on. The default is to re-size to current resolution.

I would make dailies in 1080p 25 not SD PAL. After you edit and bring it back into Resolve you may have rescaling issues when you relink to the originals. I presume the finish is 1080. SD anamorphic has distortion applied in FCP to get 16:9. In a time of such cheap big external drives, I would prefer ProResLT in 1080 than making a potential problem using SD anamorphic rushes files.

Michael,

Thanks for spotting that. There will be a fair bit of graphics, fx and archive in the production so I think you're right, the best option as you point out, bring it all to 1080p.

Cheers Joseph,

Sounds logical, I just wanted to be sure and not to cause problem at the online stage.
