Need LOG color space for Standard Style footage.

Hi all. I'm hoping someone out there can help me with this problem

I'm curently using Resolve 10b lite to color grade some footage shot on a Canon 5D Mark II with the Standard Picture Style, and I'm having a heck of a time. I am normally used to either 1) grading my own 5D3 Magic Lantern raw footage and getting a nice flat, LOG image by using the BMD Color space setting, or 2) grading Technicolor Cinestyle footage, which comes in nice and flat, with lots of information there.

So my questions is - is there a way to convert this Standard Style footage I'm currently working with to a flatter, LOG space image approaching Technicolor's Cinestyle in Resolve? Or even outside Resolve would do, say in AE or the like.

Thanks much!

-Pat

You can't get more bits out than you have going in. So while you can flatten out the image that is there. It won't improve anything or give you more latitude.

btw, it's log as in logarithmic, not LOG as in LetOperatorGuessexposure.

Hi Juan. Thanks for the response. Yes, I do realize that I'm not adding any information to the clip by flattening it out into a more log (all lowercase) space. Was just looking for a common starting point for various clips that I have on the same timeline, some of which were shot with cinestyle. Plus, I've become used to working this way and I find it to be a nice workflow with a solid starting point.

Out of curiosity, how would YOU go about grading footage that come from a non log place? I follow your work, and The Coloristos ColorCast is must hear listening for me, so any advice you might have would be appreciated.

Thanks again.

Well if you apply an s-curve to make a log image look more like video... one would imagine a reverse s-curve would have the opposite effect.

I personally would just grade it. LGG works quite well on a video source.

Wise words from Juan. People forget that many of us color-corrected from film to video for decades, and we had no LUT. We just did it by gut instinct. My joke was, "I just turn the knobs until I like the picture I see."
