NEW PC!!! Need advice.
on Jun 28, 2013 at 8:35:06 pm

Hi! I recently purchased my new pc. I'm quite confused with the storage. I made a setup for Premiere CS6, but now I would like to know how to configure for Davinci.

My PC:

- 3930K 3.8 GHz
- Gigabyte GTX 670 OC 2GB
- 32GB 1600Mhz
- W7 Ultimate x64
- Dell U3014
Storage:

- C: 256GB Samsung 840 Pro: OS / App
- D: 1TB Caviar Green: Preview - Media Cache - Exports
- E: 1TB Caviar Black: Medium - Projects
- F: 2TB Caviar Green: 1TB: Internal Backups
                                     1TB: Downloads - Plugins - Tutorials ...

Yesterday I bought other 1TB Caviar Black. And I've thought about doing RAID with E: Media - Projects. It is a good idea? And if so, which RAID?

Currently working with Canon DSLR files 720p/1080p. But later I would like to work with RAW files, as I like to be a colorist. And the storage configuration is really costing me.

I have the Logitech G13, but can not find how to make it work on Davinci.

Thanks

I think u should consider combining D, E and your new drive into a RAID 0 array for your media. Even with these three together you don't have a lot of bandwidth for some formats but it will be better than having just two drives in the raid.

But the D is Caviar Green and the other two are Black, RPM is different. Thanks

In that case, try to put three equal drives in a RAID 0 array. Peter

As a general rule don't use Variable spin rate or lower rpm drives for media. The latency on mechanical drives is already much higher than SSD's and high PWM drives add to that. Green drives are meant for archive or sample storage and that is about it. I would suggest making the raid 0 out of the 2 Black drives for now and move to an SSD media drive when you are working with raw. The Crucial 960GB drives are really inexpensive for size at release. Testing with 4x 960GB on a Intel mid level SAS controller gives 1.8GB/s to 3GB/s depending on the file sizes.
