GTX Titan .... now I'm confused
on Feb 19, 2013 at 3:39:12 pm

Was thinking to pull a trigger on the gtx 690. As I am currently running a single quadro 4000 as gui and gpu card and want a dedicated Image processing Gpu.
Now with Titan being released on feb. 25th (specs:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-titan/specificatio...

Will it be a so called 690 "killer" or is it just a marketing thing and wont add any power over a 690 in resolve? 6gb of ram sound berserk to me.

Any thoughts?

As a standalone card, with a seperate GUI card, and a full resolve license, the 690 still wins. For use as GUI and processing, or with a lite license the Titan will come out ahead.

Well have lots of choices. And maybe a new cubix champ.

ok, I get your point. But what makes the Titan a lesser dedicated GPU Card than the 690? I guess comparing 4gb of ram to 6gb is not the only factor in measuring performance.

I'm in the same boat. About to purchase 3x GTX 680 inside a Cubix and then this comes out.

Juan, I'm assuming you've not had a chance to test yet, but you seem to be knowledgeable about these things... in your opinion, would the Titan be a better option inside a Cubix running on OS X?

Alex - Cubix has not yet tested this GTX card with any of the Xpander models. I don't anticipate any issues with using it, but keep this info in mind as you purchase products for use with Xpander. You might contact Mic Grover in Cubix Support (micg@cubix.com, ph 775-888-1000, ext 220) before making a decision one way or the other.

Looks like you'll be able to optimize CUDA via software! Sounds interesting...

Quote from the article above:
"Tapping in to the full-speed FP64 CUDA cores requires opening the driver control panel, clicking the Manage 3D Settings link, scrolling down to the CUDA – Double precision line item, and selecting your GeForce GTX Titan card. This effectively disables GPU Boost, so you’d only want to toggle it on if you specifically needed to spin up the FP64 cores.

We can confirm the option unlocks GK110’s compute potential, but we cannot yet share our benchmark results. So, you’ll need to look out for those in a couple of days."

I guess it's safe to say, we'll just have to wait for some hard facts from benchmarks and fellow DaVinci user experiences.

Well they cost double what a 4gb 680 does right? And unless you're trying to do stereo 4k, I think we're reaching the point where the CPU in the Mac is being slowed down by raw formats more than resolve needs gpu power. I mean after 3 x gtx 680 4gb it might be diminishing returns.

You think only in terms of Mac though. linux and windows boxes both can use multiple gpus, and can have significantly faster processors and busses. The Macs are just really freaking old. :(

I was talking about Mac Pro. And Paul, I think you're probably right about processor speed being the bottleneck these days, particularly for Macs. Here's hoping the 'Spring 2013' rumours turn into something positive...

I've been told by a couple of people that I can expect very good performance from the 3x GTX 680 cards (50fps with 10 nodes on 4K R3D or something similarly crazy), which really is not going to have me complaining any time soon! I'll believe that when I see it though. Just thought it was worth checking if people thought the Titan card would be significantly better.

You most certainly can't expect anything close to 4K 50fps from any hardware in r3d, unless you've got like four red rocket cards to do debayering.

Yeah I did have my doubts! Still, should be quite a bit faster than the Apple Color system I've been using.

Helps even more if you get the hell out of R3D.

So trim r3d
Render to 4k dpx
Proxy at hd?
For all projects?

I don't trim the r3d.
And rarely go to a 4K intermediate, unless I'm delivering 4K.
No proxys.
Only for wholly red projects, if it's 1 or 2 red shots, I'll live with r3d.

First reports on the Titan (anandtech, tomshardware) say that it is faster than 680 (by ca 50%) and slightly slower than 690. If you are on Mac and the GPU limit is three (not counting GUI) it is probably better to have 1xGUI + 3x Titan (equal to 4.5 x 680) than 2x690 which works out to 1xGUI and 3x 680. In other words:
1x GUI + 3 titans give you 50% more power than either max configuration with 680 or 690.
Also 6GB VRAM is way better for resolutions >2K than 4GB from 680, not mentioning the 2x2GB on the the 690.
NDA from Nvidia goes off thursday and more detailed reports will be released.

First Titan Benchmarks (though testing video games) have arrived!

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/nvidia_geforce_titan_%E2%80%93_be...

According to this Article the Titan is the fastest single GPU card at the moment but looses to the GTX 690 in the benchmarks...
Thought it would turn out to be faster, but still waiting on some hard resolve facts here. Maybe a dual GPU Titan some time down the road with ass whooping 12Gb of vram?

And you propose to cool this proposed dual-Titan GPU monster how Nicholas??? ;)

Robert's numbers above appear correct. My recommended Xpander model for hosting 3x or 4x GTX Titans external to the host machine is the new Xpander Desktop Elite, which features a 1500W power supply, variable speed temperature controlled exhaust fan, LCD front panel status and control buttons. Same price as the Desktop 4 part numbers.

It looks like all those benchmarks are for Open CL, which is a bit different than CUDA performance. I think you can get a general idea of where the card will sit performance wise, but It will really depend on if Davinci benefits any from the better double precision CUDA cores.

AMD's lack of competition has really hurt pricing. 1 year later, and still $1000 for perhaps slightly less performance than the 690.

Eric,
where can I find more information about this model? If not available online, could I get informations via email?

Thanks
