Benchmarks wanted, please participate!
on Jul 3, 2012 at 8:10:27 am

As I just build my new Resolve system, I'm wondering how it's doing compared to other configurations. Therefore I created a very simple benchmark test that probably isn't scientifically correct, but will shine some light on various options and how they perform.

The idea is this:

1. Download the following clip from the BMD website
http://video.blackmagic-design.com/Arri_Alexa_LogC_1080p24_Old_Car.zip

2. create a 24 fps project with the clip

3. Loop playback and see how many nodes off 100% blur you can add, while maintaining 24 fps (realtime) playback.

4. Post your results together with some details about your system, like this (these are actually my own results):

System: Win 64 bit
Resolve version: 8.2.1. lite
Slot configuration: slot 1 GTX 580 1,5 GB, slot 2 GTX 560 Ti 2GB.
Number of blur nodes in realtime: 12

If anyone has suggestions for this test, or if I forgot something important, please tell...

I'm curious to see some results!

Baseline, full blown Linux... WOW
on Jul 5, 2012 at 7:37:11 pm

Just got some info from a colleage, at his place they have an full DaVinci, turnkey system... and guess what... its not that fast at all.... BUT a very nice controller.

DaVinci 8.2 Linux, 24GB RAM, 50TB NEXsan E18 10gbit/s
with 1 Nvidia S4 2200 rack mount GPU
Numbers of blur nodes in realtime: 24

Without the Nvidia S4 (which is 4 Quadra FX 5800 cards in parallel) it does only 8 blur nodes...

So time for BMD to open up for some other cards on the mac....

Turns out that a regular macpro with cubix 4, and one redrocket and 3 GTX cards will do alot more...

The S4 (4 x 5800) is a 2008/2009 configuration. The newer systems with faster GPUs are a lot faster of course.

Resolve 9 seems to boost performance. I went from 12 realtime blur nodes to 16, ofcourse with the same setup.

Pepjin, are you using a video output card or not? They tend to slow down frame rates..

Hi Timo,

You're right, I didn't have an output card by that time, but now I do, a decklink sdi.

Just did the same ol test with v9b2 and I'm getting 18 nodes of blur now. Nice improvement!
