Caching does not allow for smooth playback
on Jan 26, 2015 at 8:27:03 pm

Hi,

I am having trouble playing stabilised clips properly, even after the shot has been cached (with the blue line on top). Is caching not rendering the shot for playback? I know my system has its limitations (early 2011 macbook pro with 16 gigs of ram - out via mini monitor to HP Dreamcolor Z24), but I don't understand why a shot can't play back properly after a cache. Will I only be able to see the results of my stabilisations after an export via the "Deliver" room?

I hope you cached to a light media file (ProRes or DNxHD) and not to something heavy like Uncompressed.
Settings - General settings - Cache frames in ...
If the old silver-back can't play ProRes422 it is really time for an hardware upgrade :)

I had similar problem one day with Neat video.

Change in file format did not help.

Thanks for the advice. All the original footage is ProRes HQ. I had my cache set to the same, but I'll try regular ProRes to see if that makes any difference. My mac can handle ProRes HQ and even ProRes 4444 fine...it's Resolve that seems to have a problem properly rendering it.

Render cached a 5-second shot I worked on Fusion in the Edit timeline and it will not playback smoothly. I tried Prores Lite and other flavors as well.

I have a pretty new macbook pro 2017
3.1 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Radeon Pro 560 4096 MB

Thanks for your help.

HD or 4k? What's the frame rate? Which drive are the renders going to? Lots of info needed to try and see where the problem might be.

I'm assuming Resolve 15 because you mention Fusion, If you are on an early beta it might be worth going to the latest beta5 as this may also be an old bug that has been fixed.

Sorry for the lack of details. I am doing an HD composition using my internal drive. I am on the latest beta.

If you have an external drive, I would try putting the render files on that, not the internal. I presume your media is on an external. It is less critical these days to avoid having media on a system drive but it is still good practice to avoid clogging up the system drive with media. If you are having trouble playing ProResLT then there is something seriously wrong.

Also just check the render file attributes to make sure you are setting the codec correctly. It is confusing in the preferences as renders and optimised media are set separately. Finally are you waiting for the render bar to turn blue before playback?

I can play Prores no problem on the computer using Premiere Pro. It's only in DaVinci that I have this issue. I will try an external drive. Thanks for your help.
