Correct Qualifier behavior?
on Nov 19, 2014 at 8:14:31 am

Hi,

I am observing the following, grading r3d footage in LOG Space.

Using the Lift wheel I am crushing the blacks down to the "0" line on the waveform (and beyond).

Now I want to use the LUM qualifier to avoid touching the darkest areas.

I raise the Low Clip threshold, however I am not seeing anything happen in the blacks until I have raised the threshold to a Low Level of 52.

Is this normal? And is so, why? Why would the threshold not be much closer to "0"?

Thank you as always... Tobias

Are you doing the key in serial or paralel node?

Then you should be able to get proper key.

HAve you tested different modes HLS, rgb etc. ?

I wouldn't worry about the numbers. Just worry about the results you see on screen and on the scopes.

It's normal. As I pointed out last time someone asked this, the qualifiers works in float space, and let's you differentiate below black and over white values, as well as visible values.

Ah, ok... thanks. In the end, yes, I just looked at the results. Would the Offset also influence where the key starts to work?

I wouldn't touch the Offset if the basic picture looks good. Adjust the qualifiers to match the picture; don't move the Offset to change the qualifiers. Ignore the numbers.

Why do you stay away from the Offset?

Offset can work in some situations. It all depends on the nature of the initial photography and exposure. There are very few absolutes in this business.
