How to insert a picture in a TV Set with tracking movement...?
on Nov 13, 2014 at 11:41:48 am

Hi,

I can't seem to figure this out:

On V1 I have my master shot with a TV set (camera is moving)
On V2 I have the image I would like to place inside the TV set image area (PIP)

What is the best way to achieve this?

Thank you very much for any thoughts!

Tobias

In a compositing application. :)

Luckily BMD has just made a free version of Fusion available, which could handle this quite effortlessly.

Layering the two images is a more-or-less trivial exercise, but doing it convincingly is of course the challenge. You might be most puzzled by the challenge of matching the movement of the background plate (TV set) -- which can be roughly accomplished by using the stabilization function on it, then applying (copy-and-paste) that data into the foreground element (picture you wish to insert). This isn't really what the stabilization mode is intended to do, and there are a lot of factors that will come into play that will most likely not make this the preferred method to match the motion.

There are a number of compositing applications that are ideally suited for delivering a composite like this... Motion, AfterEffects, MochaPro, Nuke, Smoke, Shake, etc., etc. What makes the effect realistic is usually tied to trying to match the original environment of the shoot -- simply pasting in the replacement video unaffected doesn't really satisfy most audiences -- you do need to mix in some optics like aberrations, reflections, and overall chromatic balance.

Thank you both.

I thought there might be a really easy way by now in Resolve, seeing how the App is pushing so much towards online finishing and mastering.

Joseph, I'll give the copy paste idea a try, thank you!

Do you think that some compositing elements will start to surface in Resolve due to EyeOn development, or a Seeaales Integration between the two?

There already are, as there is a way now to import Mocha tracking data via a Boris plugin, among other processes that the OpenFX architecture makes available.

Just copy pasting gets you half way as jPo stated.

You need to make some edge softening and probably masking to make it more
blend to the original image. Sometimes noise or grain is also needed for the replacement
layer that it would not pop out.

Any compositing app would give you that control faster compared to Resolve for now.
I'm sure Fusion will change that a lot in near future.

Do you think that some Fusion features will appear in Resolve? Or will there simply be a string interaction link estabished between the two?

Not sure which way but it is fore sure some sort of plan that BM has.

They have never got any product just for fun.

It will just take some time.

That's true and thus far they have been providing a lot of really good stuff for us with that strategy.
