Uprez to Cinema Scope 2.39 from 1080
on Mar 3, 2014 at 6:19:14 pm

I am grading a 1080p 23.98 project with 2.39 output blanking and the client wants to deliver 2.39 aspect ratio but at a resolution of 2048x858. How best to do this - Resolve/AE/etc?

Thanks
Andrew

I would create that XY in Resolve, conform, color, or whatever needs to be done and then export as same XY. You may need to apply a scale/resize depending on your sources and if they have letterboxing or not (if they are coming from Media Composer).

If you have letterboxed finished clip, then look to After Effects to do the resize/scaling. They have added some very nice quality uprez in their latest CC version.

Thanks for the reply - just curious to respond, its coming from fcp7 xml and is 1080p 23.98, I am grading with 2.39 output blanking ON in Resolve.

They want two:

1) 1080 full frame w/out 2.39 crop
2) 2048x858 w/ 2.39 crop

I have both Resolve and AE CC - can you possibly explain in a little more detail how to do in both apps so I can compare quality/results?
Thank you

  • Set Timeline Resolution to 2k 16:9
  • (2048x1152)
  • In Output Scaling set to scale full frame with crop
  • .
  • Remove output blanking
  • .
  • Deliver at 2k DCI Scope 2.39

  • Resolve has a very good "optical quality" scaler. I would be curious to see if AE could do better.

Ok great thanks John, any one know how best to do this in latest version of AE CC - I am hoping to compare the quality between the apps and report back my findings in this thread.
    Cheers

In AE, make a new comp with the 2048x858 dimensions. Then drag the footage to the comp, and scale it to 106,67%, if it's 1920x1080. Render to DPX 10 bit or 16 bit, make sure the project bit depth is also at least 16 bit.

I wouldn't do a XYZ conversion in Resolve (or AE..) Easy DCP and Final DCP both do a good job.

Also interested to hear about the difference between AE and Resolve scaling. I've had good experience with Resolve before.

This is the new feature I would want to as part of a test between the different scalers. Adobe calls it Detail preserving upscale and you can see a quick video here: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adobe-at-ibc-2013/after-effects-cc-detailpreservi...
