Easiest way to raise and clip black levels?
on Feb 8, 2014 at 12:01:29 am

There's got to be a way to do this more easily… for a while I have been using a little trick where i put three nodes, one to clip blacks, another with a slight soft clip on black which makes blacks irretrievable, and then another which pulls blacks up.

Anyone have a tip on an easier way (without 3 nodes) to clip and lift blacks?

thanks

Just us the soft clips.

Should have specified, I want to lift/clamp blacks more than is possible by simply using the traditional soft clip.

I'm working with various 8mm and 16mm footage and frequently want to match the heavily clamped / lifted and tinted black levels of various Lo-fi transfers. I guess the 3 node method is it, just wishful thinking. I guess I could achieve this with curves but not ideal.
I'd love to be able to leave the age exactly as is but raise / clip the blacks up to high levels...

You can get them pretty high by lifting the clip... there are two controls on the soft clips... clipping and softness. Raise the clip level and you can get a rather high amount of lift.

Understood, I'm matching some 8mm film transfers with quite extreme looks and need to really pull the blacks up. Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep on doing what I've been doing!

Use curves.

Yes indeed, curves work decently for this, but it takes a little patience to create a flat toe on the curve and ride it up and down to elevate or lower the floor…

What I would really like is just soft clip but with more range to allow for more stylized looks (matching old vintage poor quality transfers).

Honestly I'll just keep using my 3 node approach w/ a soft clip to clip and pull values out of floating point.

thanks everyone for the great suggestions.
