RAIDs with the new MacPro
on Dec 9, 2013 at 7:25:13 pm

I'm using a 2009 MacPro with an 8 (x1TB) bay enclosure that I built 2 years ago. Since I put my current system together, I neglected to keep up with the latest advancements in RAID technology.

I'm thinking about buying another ProAvio but I'm not sure what kind of RAIDs will be used with the new MacPro which I will probably buy early next year.

I'm not sure if with the new MacPro if I should use a different type of enclosure based on thunderbolt technology. Or if what I'm using (which requires an internal card) is still the best way to go.

Basically, what I'm asking is: is everyone using some kind of thunderbolt RAID now or are things still the same as they were 2 years ago??

Thanks!

No, they changed drasticly...
Stuff is cheap now AND super fast.
I just got me a brand new super small Areca ARC 5026 and I am pushing 700 mb/s write and 550 mb/s read with only 4 WD Black FASS Disks.

The same disks I had in my tower...and its not even noisy.
They also have an 8bay version if you need more safety or space.
700 for the enclosure, 150 per disk...if you go for the new 4TB ones
So 1300 for 16TB in production performance...I think thats amazing.

A slice of color...

"Stuff is cheap now AND super fast." --- always good to hear, thanks :)

A question: If you are using thunderbolt, are you running on a MacPro now? The last time I looked into it (which was a long time ago) there was no way to run thunderbolt on MacPros. Is there a solution for that now or are you running on something else?

I may not upgrade to the new MacPro for 4-6 month so I'm not sure if I could use a thunderbolt enclosure now, or if maybe I should wait till I get the new MacPro next year.

I am curious... what kind of RAID do you have setup with this configuration? RAID-0 or something else?
