Candle test V10?!
on Sep 5, 2013 at 12:26:31 pm

Hi.

As V10 will emerge in not so distant future and machines are insanely fast maybe we could
make new version of candle test for it?

I have some material i have shot on my BMC cam as dng 2,5k (2400x1350 pixels).
I could provide it for testing reasons for everybody to test on.

I also could put it al up to my dropbox.

What i'm missing is original v8 or v9 candle test to make it based on those.

What you think ?

Great idea! However, what's the best way to handle isolating the things we are testing. Your 2.5k cinema DNG footage, for example, might bottleneck GPU/CPU performance. However, doing tests on lightweight SD clips wouldn't correctly show performance when performing temporal effects on 4k footage.

What about 1080, and 4k ProRes 4444 clips?

Yes i was thinking about it as large material could bog down under io speed etc.

I have some Arri ProRez material at hand but i have to check about the rights.

In the sense overall performance maybe will be interesting in some point
but that may kill GPU speed focus a bit.

At the moment i do not have much "good" material at hand to test out my new GPU
and this got me thinking.

I did remod version of the v9 candle test with new file from current installer and got something but will not share it yet until it is ok to share screenshots and like.

BTW what was the original resolution for candle test in v9 ?

Been messing around with v9 test and not sure what should it be to get comparable
results.

In pal (720*576) resolution as the parrot video is i got something like that:

4 - 24
8 - 24
16 -24
32 - 18
64 -10

all nr 24

If in stretched Full hd the result is not as far as nice.

Not even sure if i would have to configure something in software (GTX780 pc in my machine now.)

Well, the reason for using the parrot is to keep IO issues at the minimum.
I am not at the machine with a proper setup but I can run it tomorrow at work again.
The idea is to not alter ANY settings, just flick through the Versions and note the FPS
You should have the same performance than a Cubix 4x 580 system, according to your card's specs.
Maybe we should set the framerate higher...
I will dive into it tomorrow..

But then see what is the resolution on your project?

When i see my test in HD 1080p i'm not as impressed as i would think of i would have.

I just figured i had used gui as gpu turned on and it did bog down a lot.
AFter turning it off i got on v9

blur 4 - 24
8 - 24
16 - 20

etc.

Is there a DRP of the Candle Test somewhere?

Also, has anyone talked to BMD about adding the DRP to the installer package? It seems pretty straight forward to do, especially if the media in the project is one of the sample files.

It could also be a great way to confirm there is little/no variation in the project between those doing the reporting.

Hello, my first post here. I have been using Resolve only about 6 months and just upgraded from an iMac to a 2009 Mac Pro 8 core. I am on v10 and noticed on the candle test the blur nodes are fine but the NR nodes have blank settings, I imagine because NR was moved to its own tab in 10 and is saved differently. That would explain the earlier post with 24fps on all NR tests. I would have a preference to using the same footage and tests as previous versions so enhancements across versions could be measured as well. If someone could post what the NR settings in v9 were so I could replicate in v10, that would be great.

My results
Mac Pro 4,1 2x 2.26GHz, 18GB, 2 TB internal raid, SSD boot
PowerColor Radeon HD 7950 3 GB gpu and gui (pc version)

V1 22fps
V2 20fps
V3 16fps
V4 9fps
V5 4.5fps

Noise reduction is active on my system but no numbers as they will not compare to anything until we decide a standard for v10

Hi

What are the NR settings for the candle test?

I've opened the project in v10b1 (have an undelivered project in limbo so not moving to b3) and the see spatial NR is a 0.0

I'm setting them to a arbitrary medium 10 for now as I'm really wanting to compare pre/post a hardware upgrade.
