Playback stalls on Network Drives
on Aug 27, 2013 at 4:55:44 pm

When we run Resolve on a Facilis Terrablock with Multwrite drives (appears as network drives like Unity or ISIS), we get a stall at each new shot on playback. If we struggle through a few times, it seems to cache somehow and then will play without hiccuping.

The same volume mounted as a single write drive (appears as direct attached storage) has no issues.

Bandwidth tests show no issues either.

I have talked to another house who had similar issues with renders stalling on ISIS.

Is there a trick to using a network shared drive with Resolve?

Sounds like network latency. How are you connected to the network on the client systems and at the server?

DNxHD 175 23.98 1080Psf.

Not a very demanding stream. Again, the exact same volume mounted as a "single-write" drive (meaning it appears as a regular volume not a network shared drive) works fine. So that leads me to believe it's not bandwidth issues. I was wondering if Resolve treats a network mounted volume differently than a direct attached volume.

I haven't had issues over unmanaged ethernet SAN. i wonder if its a permissions issue since it sounds like you're switching between locked and unlocked volumes. Maybe Resolve has an issue with Read-Only media (which seems really strange to me). Are you writing DNX back to the volume, or something more metadata intensive like DPX? Might want to repost over in SAN networks and see if Jim from Facilis has any answers.

The Network drivers and OS treat the data differently between network volumes and Direct Attached volumes. There are several differences which mostly revolve around latency. Latency and throughput are different. You can have a network that pushes a 1GB/s a sec however if the latency is to high the playback will still interrupt. If you have software layers for file writing that allow multiple access then that will also add latency to the data stream. Davinci ram previews so when you first hit play Davinci's player is building buffers into the ram. Once the buffers are built then the preview will be seemless because the network latency is no longer involved. The Data is local. That is why it stops at each clip when you first start playback and then will play fine the next time.

I agree with Eric, this is a latency issue and is due to the way the OS is handling the network share. Some program will realize a file system is not direct attached and preread the a clip ahead so as to avoid dropping frames due to latency. Resolve definitely prefers direct attached media.

Well, this seems to match what our tests are showing. We have been running several other apps for years on the MultiWrite (network attached) Terrablock volumes for years with now issues.

I just wonder what Resolve is doing differently?

I disagree with my esteemed colleagues
While latency is an issue with the 1gbe systems used by mr Hanson, mr boden,mr salvo, and myself,
You are using a facilis with 4g atto fc41es fibre cards in server and client, connected to a qlogic switch.
You are trying to play a single 20MB/sec stream on a system that can do 200MB/sec per client.
IMHO you do not have a latency issue.
Facilis needs to download resolve lite and do a simple import and playback of a DNX file. The download is free for them. This is local to resolve. You won't get help from BMD on this.

Terence -

What was the resolution on this? Did you hear back form BM? They are usually very prompt about these kinds of things.

Haven't heard back from them. It appears that the issue doesn't happen on Macs. So it's a network mounted drive on Windows that is the problem.

Then do bug Facilis - they will get back to you at some point shortly. I am looking at using Facilis Storage and this is a real sticking point for us...

Facilis is looking into it. I suspect it is going to come down to something Resolve is doing with network attached drives in Windows.

For the meantime, our workaround is to use the Terrablock drives in single user mount mode instead of MultiWrite.

Yep that is the latest one since it has been discontinued. Outside of checking for advance settings to streamline the network processing, I cant see a way to fix this on the adapter side.

Well, we are using the same adapters on Macs on the same Terrablocks and they don't have the same issue. :-(

OSX handles the network traffic differently than Windows. Also do you have GPU acceleration capable cards in the Mac systems?

Go to 1 of the Windows systems and then under Master Project settings. Under Playback settings you should see "Use optimized Playback display mode during Playback". Checkmark that box and see if there is any difference.

Well beyond that I would need to remote in and see what advance settings if any are available for those adapters. You may end up looking at 8Gbit or 10Gbit adapters with lower latency options to get this resolved.
