Newbie Q, how do I replace footage with VFX clips
on Aug 21, 2013 at 1:41:24 pm

Hi all
New to Resolve,
Ive conformed an AAF of a 4 minute movie, and there's now shots that are coming from NUKE & AE that I need to replace.
Normally, in Flame, I would copy the conformed clip, call it Master and start updating this new timeline, not disturbing the original conform.
(this way I have the original Edit in tact for going back if I need to)
How can I copy the timeline in Resolve?
Or is there a better strategy of building up the work?
Thanks
Itai

hi,

newbie questions usually go here: http://forums.creativecow.net/davinci_lite

My way for doing this is simply add a new video track, and keep the original video at track 1 (in case of you need to export it to somebody), and put the VFX shot at track 2. After that you can simply copy the grade to the VFX shot.

Thanks, but there's a lot of dissolves which I don't want to recreate.
I need the same conform copied so I can insert new clips into it.

The easiest and most painless way to to this is to use Scratch...
Just kidding..;)
What we did is to have an intermediate stage where you will overwrite the footage.
So you should make a copy of your footage folder now and rename that GRADED.
Then you ask the VFX guys to overwrite the footage in your other folder whenever they see it fit for judgement.
Depending on the need of having to go back to old versions you can make the data wrangling process with scripts that automatically move the last version into a folder with a new version.
So you are always looking at the most recent VFX with the ability to manually load the last one or any you need to compare.
Use a new video track for that, its easiest like that.

Good luck :)

Thanks, but the source footage is comprised of 300 gb of Epic and Alexa clips.
How can you accomplish overriding those with VFX shots done at HD with file sequences?
Sigh... there is really no way to duplicate a timeline, not the entire footage?
Seems I will need to re-conform it with a different name.
Only thing that I had some problems in the Conform and I don't want to go over that again...
How easy is Scratch to learn? :-)
Thanks
Itai

if you want to simply duplicate a timeline, select all the clips, copy, and paste it to a new timeline?

After a few crashes, Resolve allowed me to copy and paste the tracks, thanks!
Now I have another newbie question but I'll post it in the Basic forum,
Thanks

Copying and pasting into new track will not bring over resizes in aaf.

Thanks
