5K aspect ratio?
on Apr 19, 2013 at 3:53:16 pm

I am grading a film with the following specs:

Aspect Ratio - 2.40:1
Red Epic 5K (mix of 5120x2560 & 4096x2160)
Final Cut 7
Final Output: 1920x1080p and possible 2K to go to DCP

I am curious if I should select 2.35 for output blanking while grading in my 1080p23.98 project - it defaults to 1.85 but the editor also left in some basic motion attributes in a lot of clips which came thru in the xml.

Should I ignore the scaling - on some clips its not just zooming in a bit its also moving the whole image up or down a bit (obviously he was doing this with the 2.40:1 aspect matte on in FCP but I want to be able to grade and output properly from resolve.

Hi Andrew,

I think you'll need to discuss the delivery in greater detail with the team, but I would imagine that if they are finishing 2.40, they would want to view everything the whole time in 2.40. As you said, the most useful things for them to have in the end would be:

1. 1920x1080 HD Master (with 2.40 letter boxing)
2. A 2048x858 2K Master for DCP (which is 2.39 or so)

Because Resolve is resolution independent, you can change from one project resolution to another pretty easily without your framing getting screwed up (as long as you keep the same aspect ratio and your scaling is set to one of the "fill frame/fit to frame/etc." options). There are a couple ways to do it - one way to approach these end deliverables would be by setting up a 1920x1080 project with a 2.40 masking, and making all your framing adjustments based on that while you monitor in 1080p.

Then you could output the 1080p version from your 1920x1080 project. After that, turn off the masking, switch the project to 2048x1152, and your output to 2048x858, no resizing. That would give you the 2.39 2K version without changing the aspect ratio.

As far as matching the editor's reframes, we match them all exactly and then make adjustments with the clients present. That way they only see what they are used to seeing until you broach the subject.

I don't see a preset for 2.40 blanking in Resolve so I made my own based on:

Line 91: first line of picture
Line 490: last line of picture
(399 active lines)

In output blanking this happens to be:

Top 139
Bottom 940

Correct me if I'm wrong. BMD create a 2.40 preset please!
