Full range to Video LUT
on Mar 18, 2013 at 8:30:41 pm

We wanted to rescale some full range EXR files so all seems straightforward but whether you use the data to video clip or data to video scale, both Luts clip and don't scale. How do we rescale? Everything that sounds like it will rescale seems to just clip? This happens where ever we do the conversion and you can easily see this on the scopes

Thanks

It seems to be a defacto truth that LUTS are designed to output to REC709, which is not an extended gamut. If one wishes to use a LUT designed to output to an extended video space, generally, one must create this LUT for themself. May I suggest you look into Ben Turley's LUTCALC. In LUTCALC, one has the option of generating a full scale LUT output.

Why wouldn't one of these approaches work:

Flip the linear/full range scaling in Clip Attributes or
change the Input Transform under ACES if this is an ACES-managed EXR?

LUTs are not Transforms, and if it is a range issue, then the mapping will not happily transform between colorspaces.
