matchings DSLR video with other more regular HD video....
on Mar 15, 2013 at 5:06:05 pm

More and more I am getting multicamera type scenes where there is one DSLR camera mixed with two or three regular video camera sources and can never really get them to totally match. I'm not sure if it is the H.264 compression but for one thing the shadows in the DSLR footage seem to lack detail or crispness and the whole saturation on the DSLR footage is just weird. Anyone have any general tips for how they handle these situations?

Thx
AS

ask your clients to avoid dslr is the best option as they are insanely soft
compared to other cameras due the compression and resolution interpolation.

this is why bmc camera is so popular but not available widely yet.

Haha..... I tell them over and over not to mix the cameras this way but this is constantly ignored....they buy these cameras and use them haphazardly.....

Use a DSLR that can be used with an external recorder will help a little bit?

External recorders on dslr footage don't really do much to improve the quality. The issue is more about how the sensor is line skipped and debayered in the camera than the compression. If they have to use a dslr maybe suggest the Lumix GH3 it seems sharpest and has higher bitrate recording compared to the popular 5D or 7D, etc.

Always fun! Had to intercut with Arri 4x3 2880x2160 shot with a prime lens. About the only thing that helps is a little sharpening and noise reduction. Wish the DLSR thing would go away, it's time!

[Robert Houllahan] "" Wish the DLSR thing would go away, it's time! ""

Oh, not happy with the benefits of "democratization" and the expectation of Free Lunch?

Wait until the DSLR proponents get ahold of how "ACES" will, by their interpretation, equalize everything out.

er. Not.

Did a DSLR color grade, 30 min show and thought my eyes or monitor were going but then realized focus was found on about 10% of the shots! Invoice check cashed, so could be worse!

DSLRS can look OK under very limited circumstances, such as when no grading is done at all, or when virtually nothing is in focus.
