Stills aspect ratio
on Feb 26, 2013 at 10:13:44 am

Hi,

So Im grading a SD PAL 16:9 project. I save stills to use them for matching the shots. However, my stills are displayed in 4:3. Is there a way to display them as well in 16:9?

Thanks!

You can simply stretch them and crop. It's basically the only way. Crop them in 1920x1080 on photoshop. If that will leave out things from your composition by cropping them than you must reshoot and take some new photos. But because usually a DSLR photo has higher resolution than a digital camera it won't be any problem regarding the quality. Just simply don't over stretch them.

Thanks, but

That's not good news...

I'm constantly saving stills to match them to other shots on the timeline, using a wipe or full image. Having to go thru photoshop is not an option.

Strange though why you can't watch stills in the same aspect ratio as your footage/timeline. I smell a feature request.

Hmm, good observation. Try this, select your still on the timeline then open the Inspector (Command+4) and use the Spatial Conform. If that doesn't work than i am out of ideas :)

Hi Thomes, thanks again, but Im not using stills from the timeline, my stills are in the gallery.

Plus I don't understand the command+4 command you described. In my world command+4 saves the current grade into memory D. Could you explain what you mean?

Hi Pepijn,

Not sure how this will work on your exact project, but when you are displaying the still, enter Reference reposition mode and adjust horizontal stretch... This will affect any still you play...

Hi Kevin,

Your solution sounds great and exactly what Im looking for, however when Im displaying a still and I choose the 'reference reposition' ,resolve jumps to the input/output sizing window which affects only the shot Im on in the timeline, not the reference still I was displaying. Im pretty sure Im missing something and Im close to solving the whole thing, but could you be a bit more specific please? Thanks a lot!

What I do is play a still, select reference reposition from the menu (or use keyboard shortcut) and then use my element panel to adjust the input sizing controls, but now it applies to the reference file. I honestly don't know how you do it with mouse and keyboard - it does seem overly complicated.

I tried with a Tangent Wave, but like I said, nothing happens to the still. I found an older post on this board of someone having the exact same problem. What puzzles me is that you can do it with your element panel, but I can't with my Wave or keyboard/mouse. Could it be the version? I'm on 9.0.3, full license, mac osx.

I definitely was able to do it with a wave in 8.x, but I don't have one to test...

Hi Kevin,

Finally solved it! Your instructions were perfect, also for the wave they work. But not in 9.0.2... I upgraded and then I got it, finally, working.

Trick here is that there is still a bug involved.

Pressing the reposition reference still function makes the UI jump to the input sizing window, but changing anything there (with keyboard/mouse) will change the shot in the timeline, not the still. So people without control surface will never be able to change their stills. But when you do have a control surface, like the Wave, you have to navigate to 'input sizing' there and those controls do affect the reference still.

Glad I got this solved, thanks a lot!
