lag updating preview on 2011 macbook pro resolve 9.04
on Nov 30, 2012 at 4:19:02 pm

Hi, I have a 2011 quadcore 17 inch macbook pro with ATI 6750M and a pegasus R4 thunderbolt array. When working with ProRes 1080p files there is a distinct lag on the preview when dragging around the log colorwheels or the curves. On the same system smoke 2012 is buttery smooth when doing adjustments in the color warper.

Is this the performance you'd expect to see? would the output on a HDMI preview using an ultrastudio mini monitor update faster?

I'm running OS X 10.7.5 with 16GB of RAM.

thanks

No, the lag is a typical Resolve thing.
Nothing to do about it from your side.
I have 12 frames of it ;)

wait, I've sat in on resolve grading sessions and theres no lag I could see when the colourist was working, but it might have been the client broadcast output I was seeing.

surely it can be improved, the question is, is it the graphics card on my laptop or the lack of monitoring that causes the lag?

Hi Roger, there is processing latency between the ui viewer and the grading monitor but you may be experiencing more than the normal lag due to the relatively low GPU power in the MBP. It's the same for other restricted GPU systems, when Resolve can't process the grades in real time and you can see this when in play and the red GPU indication is on, the GPU buffer becomes very busy and there is a lag between adjusting the ui and the viewer screen change. You won't see this on the more powerful systems or at lower resolutions.

One thing you can try, set your input sizing to bilinear and monitoring to 8 bit. You could then also try a 720p timeline for the grade and reset the timeline res to HD for render.

Thanks peter, 720p helped a little but its still lagging. I'm a little disappointed since this system with pegasus array is pretty fast for smoke. realtime uncompressed 2K playback is not a problem in Smoke and the GUI updates smoothly.

I can't seem to even get realtime playback of h264 files on the timeline with no color grading applied. Is there any way in Resolve to pre-render the timeline to a format that it likes to work with to speed up future processing?

In smoke I can conform a mixed codec timeline, hit process on the whole timeline, go have a coffee, then the entire timeline gets rendered to smokes native DPX format and from that point on it plays fast and is fast to work with interactively.

Anything similar in Resolve?

Yes Resovle can also render cache. There is extensive coverage in the user guide.

uhhh...and it works not as expected ?

1. Does it keep cache clips when switching the project.
2. Is the black images bug gone now ?
3. Can we group select clips to be added or removed from the cache ?

I mean, I would love to use it...but I was unlucky in the past

if you read config manual then you see that all laptops are relatively weak.

ok there is lag but weaker the machine have bigger lag always.

Yes, except the same laptop can do realtime playback and decent interactive performance with smoke and plenty of realtime effects in FCP X and Premiere Pro on HD 1080p footage. if its weak then its weak because Davinci haven't optimized the code as well as Autodesk, Adobe and Apple have.

Totally different approach as it utilizes gpu with cuda.

what? Smoke and Premiere Pro both use CUDA and/or OpenCL. Not it's not totally different.

You want to collapse all the color operations to a single 3D lut and apply it in realtime using the GPU. People have been doing that in realtime on 2K footage since the very first version of Lustre in 2001 LONG before OpenCL or CUDA existed.

A modern laptop has the graphics grunt to do it, if you write the code for that specific chipset. For whatever reason Davinci hasn't chosen to do that.

But in the other hand why would it need to run on every laptop ?

On laptop you could use something else then ?

It has also been long time that some apps like to live on
specific hardware and work there nicely.

It is more windows thing to run on what ever and crash a lot.

Since when was Lustre realtime ?
One color correction, or two...thats it.
If I would try to play a node tree that runs on my home system in Resolve, it would play with like 3 fps or so on Lustre.
