Learning Resolve

Hello,

I'm new to resolve and just getting the basics down and need some pointers in the right direction!
So I'm learning my primary colour correction, spreading the tonal range evenly etc., I was under the assumption that to achieve this I would use master Lift Gamma & Gain (primary tab).
Watching parade and monitor the results were unsatisfactory to say the least (dull dark colourless).
So then I just played around reset and proceeded to use the wheels in the 3-way colour tab until parade was even to great effect.
What is the common way, how am i getting this different effect through the wheels than opposed to
Lift Gamma & Gain when the parade is close to identical.

Thank you.
