Comparing GFX cards - 5770 vs Nvidia?
on Aug 1, 2012 at 2:29:04 pm

I did some cow-searching this morning but didn't clearly find what I was looking for.
So I thought I'd just ask.

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro
12GB ram
ATI 5770 gfx card
I'm running Davinci Lite
Tangent Wave

NO real plans to upgrade to Davinci "regular" yet.

My question is, would upgrading to a GTX 570 as opposed to the 5770 be enough of a noticeable difference?

thanks - trying to make the decision today.

Huge improvement with the NVIDIA 570.

Awesome. I'll make the switch then. Thanks Rohit.

I'm guessing there is a Mac and PC version of the card?
I don't want to order the wrong one.

If you are ok with not seeing the boot screen you can get the PC version (assuming you have Lion). If you need to see the boot screen, you will need to get it on eBay (flashed for EFI).

Upgrading to Lion today. (crossing fingers)

Boot screen? yeah I don't think I'd care not seeing that.
You mean boot screen for the mac when rebooting? or Resolve boot screen?

(maybe I don't know what 'boot screen' means)

Whoops.

I just noticed the 570 doesn't have a mini Display port, so my Apple Cinema Display (with minidisplay port) would be tough to view without spending more on an adapter.

I'll have to look into this more. ... quickly. =)

Dont switch it, add it.

Not much is gained from a single card.

I'm game for that too.

But I don't know if I have enough room.
Also, will Resolve Lite use a 2nd card?

Currently

Slot 1: ATI 5770
Slot 2: Decklink Extreme HD
Slot 3: CalDigit RAID card
Slot 4: Esata card (I don't really need this... much)

Hi Bryan,
I'm running a 2008 mac pro with a 5770 as the GUI and gtx 470 as the GPU. I got the 470 from the macvidcards guy on ebay. I jumped the power supply off the DVD player to the second 6pin power connector on the 470. Ive read that you could also split the power from the 6 pin connector on the motherboard too.

There are a couple discussions in the forum about that.

Ive used this setup for the past 11 months with no issues.

Problem is, you need two need cards...
The 5770 is taking too much space and power.
So either a cheap GT120 or an expensive Quadro4000.

It really depends what you wanna do, so better look out for a 580 GTX with Displayport, Mountain Lion supports em now

Thanks Lee and Sascha

*sigh* so many numbers. =) Thanks for the help.

So, for that GTX570 HD 2560MB that I posted the link too above, I found a display port adapter that will let me use the Apple Display. So that problem is solved....I think. As long as that's the right card for a Mtn Lion Mac.. etc. (there are several options on Amazon Prime.)

But Sascha you're saying I can't use the 5770 at the same time at the GTX570 because of space and power right? (Which makes sense)
If that's the case I think I'm ok with that. I mean I'd rather have two cards, but if just replacing the 5770 with the GTX570 will give me a significant boost, that's great.

AND, I'm just running Resolve Lite, so it will only use one GPU anyway right? So two cards won't help? Am I missing something?

I'm not expecting real time. I just want something faster than the 5770, and that isn't $1000.

Dont trust those converters...I tried a bunch and none of them is working flawlessly on a Cinema Display.

Again, try to get a card with Display port out...
And also Resolve light uses 2 or more cards...dosnt matter.

You can use the 5770 and GTX, you need a Y adapter and you lose a slot
The Quadro 4000 and GT120 let U use all 4 slots in the Mac

So where is your tradeoff ?

Just to clarify, Resolve Lite is restricted to 1 image processing GPU. You can stlll have a separate UI GPU.
