last time my approach was like this:
1. generated a log/rec709 lut with arri lut generator
2. generated the r3d proxies in davinci with a "first light grade", treated red files as log film. loaded display lut from 1

sorry for my strange answer. i didn't have much time then...

why does the fx-guy need your lut? in my case the fx guy didn't want to use the
original 3ds (too slow to work with). so we decided that i do a pre-grade and then
give him that prores444 files at 2,5k in log. that way he could work well and fast
and i didn't lose too much information in terms of dynamic range for the final grade.

but what is your situation exactly? did you generate the 3d-lut in resolve and it didn't
work or was there some other problem? (look into the manual, there is a chapter which
explains the 3d-lut generating, you just have to load a certain dpx file etc.)

thanks , ya i think i figured out the process, here it is from the manual, really Black Magic? all this to create 1 lut

Workflow A:
1. Set your resolution to High Definition within the Config screen.
2. Load the trim_lut0.dpx file located at /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/ DaVinci Resolve/trim_lut0.dpx into the Browse screen’s media pool. Within the Color screen you will now see the Trim LUT file within the thumbnails.
3. Select a normal image clip on the timeline and color grade the desired offset or effect. You can grade this image like any other. Once done, select the Trim LUT clip on the thumbnail timeline with your mouse to make it the current clip.
4. With the Trim LUT file as the current clip, using the center mouse button, click on the clip you just graded with the desired offset grade. This offset grading will now be applied to the Trim LUT file. (This is a standard DaVinci Resolve copy grade operation).
5. Then, within the Config screen LUT tab, assign a name to the new LUT to be generated using the ‘Save LUT as’ window.
6. Clicking on the Generate LUT button will create the new LUT that is an offset grade. It’s the grade you made to the original image. This LUT can now be selected like any other.
7. Update the LUT list that’s at the top of the LUT tab and select as an input, output or display LUT as required. You can also use the LUT on the color page in any node.
The new LUT will appear in the 3D LUT options and can be used in any of the places DaVinci Resolve normally uses 3D LUTs. It is also possible to capture an external Trim LUT or generate one with the Resolve LUT configuration and resolution by placing this Trim LUT Clip into an external device that applies a LUT.

It's covered pretty well in the manual... but that is a good summation. All of this should be much, much easier in v9.

Well, it's exactly the same in v9 other than that this workflow description has totally disappeared from the manual! Thanks for posting it Greg - I'm not sure I'd have thought to read the v8 manual for this.

Ummmm all you have to do now is right click on the Thumbnail and click on "Generate 3D LUT". That's covered on page 560 of the manual.

And like i said, waaaaaaay easier.

Ha!

Thanks... I did search through the manual for quite a while. Still works the old fashioned way too btw :-)
