DCI Cinema Suite for Final Touch
on Mar 30, 2012 at 7:20:10 am

Hi there
Does anybody knows a DaVinci DCI suite to rent in europe?
Here is our situation:
Until now we mainly graded tv-features and commercials.
Therfor we worked on our monitor system.
One of our clients now asked us to do the grading and mastering for a cinema feature.
The DP likes to work in a DCI Suite, but he would be fine to do the pregrade and effects (5-10days) in our regular suite to go to a DCI Suite (we bring our colorist) to do the final touch (3-5 days) afterwards.
There is not such a suite to rent in Switzerland. Does anybody something like that in Europe?
Kind regards
HC

Hello,

We are in Switzerland. We graded several films for cinema DCP. But we don't work on DCI projector, we have a REC709 callibrated projector.

We generate DCP here and test them in a cinema theater close to our office.

Hi Robin. Thanks for the quick response.
We have a similar suite like you. But we need a bigger screen.
Kind regards

Hello,

Yes our screen is not so big, 2m X 1m.

You could try at EGLI in Zürich but not sure they have a bigger screen. Or maybe in Freestudio in Geneva. But it will be expensive.

Egli runs a Baselight Suite. We need a Davinci suite so we can bring the raw material and the project.
What system runs at Freestudio? Do you know that?
cheers

If you can't find a DaVinci suite why don't you go down the old school route of a "test print" ?

When I grade for 35mm release we render out some of the key / difficult scenes. Normally a couple of minutes of film and then when the lab has processed go down to our local cinema and watch it in context.

You can take a few notes and compare what you expected to what you get.

RGB to XYZ luts are great anyway so you should have no issues

Works for me!

Hope this helps.

Hi Dan. Thanks for the hint.
I was a little bit impresices. Sorry. The final result will be DCP only.
We recommended to go 2 or 3 times to a DCI cinema to check different kind of footage (outside/inside/day/night etc.) during the process. But that is not good enough for the DP.
He want's to to the final on a big screen / theater.
So if anybody knows such a facility in europe running Davinci Resolve, would help a lot.
Thanks.

If he's not happy make him pay for the rental ;)

I'm not sure of many places that have such a high spec and are open for rental i'm afraid.

Just another alternative idea, I was grading a music video as part of Den Lennie and James Tonkin's Music Video Masterclass 2011 and we needed a cinema to grade in due to the amount of students.

The best option we found was to bring our DaVinci system into a cinema and connect via 3g SDI. Was the cheapest option by far and only took about an hour to get set up in the morning.

Sorry I only have alternative ideas but I don't know many DCP compliant studios!

Thanks,

@Dan: We already thought about going to a DCI Cinema. It's not a bad idea and I would definitely go this way with my own project. I think the DP is just used to big Lustre or Baselight suites.....

Hey, when do you need this? I'm in Trondheim, Norway, and have a Resolve system on a Mac Pro (only one GPU at the moment - more to come). I've got access to a 8m wide screen in a theatre with ~100 seats and a Christie CP2220 Projector. The projector must be fed with a Dual-Link 4:4:4 XYZ signal - which is applied as a Display LUT in Resolve. Essentially - what you see is what you get.

If you can, I'd suggest you consider renting or purchasing an Autocue monitor (or similar..). In my experience, when the monitor is set right - it comes really, really close to the experience of what you'll see in terms of black levels and saturation in the theatre, so in the end it should only be minor adjustments.

@ola: Wow. Your setup sounds great! Maybe I can convince them to travel to Trondheim in November. At least it's dark outside, so not a big difference to the grading suite :-)

It's off topic. But how is you experience with the autocue? Does it come with any calibration tool?
Cheers

Within November I'm sure I've upgraded to multiple GPUs. I'm on the JL Cooper panel for now if it matters any.

On the off-topic; I'm very, very happy with the Autocue. I can adjust about anything and it has a D-cine color space with option to select 6302 Kelvin (which I'm told is the same as the Christie bulb is) along with gamma such as 2.2, 2.35, 2.4, 2.6 and probably a few more steps.

I've set up my monitor with two presets. One for cinema with DL SDI 4:4:4 D-Cine and one for SDI 4:2:2 RGB. Makes it quick to jump from one preset to another if you're on different projects at the same time.

There's no automatic calibration tools, but you can produce black to white in a range of 8-10 steps or so, and red, green, blue screens. According to Russel at Autocue, you connect say, an X-rite on the screen and go through the different shades of gray and read the values in the calibration app on the computer. Then you can adjust the settings in the monitor to the correct values.

I think about one of those monitors, if we are really gonna do a DCI grading.
Thanks for the the support.

Hi

They seem to have a DCI projector:

http://www.suite16.ch/

I don't know them but it looks impressive. Don't know if they work with Davinci.

There's also Elefant Studios:

http://www.elefantstudios.ch/

The have a Baselight. I know they did a DCP lately. Maybe they can also provide a Davinci in the grading room.

Cheers

Yes, it is Baselight 8, however, the DCP projector room can be rented separately. I can give you a Davinci-Resolve 8,2 complete system......
