New NVIDIA driver for Mac OSX Lion 10.7.3

NVIDIA has released an updated driver for Mac OSX Lion 10.7.3. It can be downloaded at:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-270.00.00f01-driver.html

The good news is this update seems to provide CUDA support on OS X for all CUDA capable NVIDIA cards including the GTX580.

We have tested this and it works well for Resolve on Mac OS X.

We were using a configuration with 3 x GTX 580 on a Cubix Desktop 4 with a GT120 GUI GPU, and we could get 25 nodes of image blur processing at 24fps, or 4 nodes of noise reduction at the default settings.

Are you saying I don't need to hack a kext file or whatever it is, and just install a regular PC version of the GTX 580?

We are just using the regular PC version of the GTX 580.

Awesome! I'll have to reconsider a Cubix over a PC then.

I'm talking to a reseller of the Cubix Desktop 4 now. He wasn't sure if it could fit 3 GTX 580 cards. Do you have a special model? He said it would fit 2 double width cards, and 4 single..

The Desktop 4 has 4 double-wide slots. You can refer to our configuration guide on our website for the exact model number.

On PC/Linux, we use 4 double-wide GPUs, but the Mac Pro is limited to a total of 4 GPUs, so one for GUI, and 3 for CUDA compute.

Aah OK. It becomes less tempting to go the Windows route now. Can't stand the thought leaving Mac for Windows. At least not now.

Would I be able to install three GTX580 and a Red Rocket?

This is very very interesting!

Is this officially supported now is did they just happen to make it work?

Yes I think you should bea able to do that Ola. I've now 2x470, 1redRocket and one 4LaneEsata card in it and it works like a charm. Space is enough in the Desktop 4 for 4 double space cards

Hi Gabrielle,

The standard exhaust moves more air than the quiet fan part number does. It also makes more noise (about 10db higher) than quiet fan exhaust part numbers (which only makes sense - more air flow, more noise)

Both part numbers use the 1200w power supply, so you're good for power.

Interesting. So, I have a 3,1 MP with the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600. I want to move this MP from FCP 7 and Color to FCP X and Resolve Lite with a side-order of Avid MC6. I would like to run on the stock PSU and be able to go to Windows on bootcamp with no issues. What should I buy?

My concern here is that Apple can quite easily pull the plug with 10.7.4

Also doesnt help that 10.7.3 causes lots of issues

Despite that, this is good news and hopefully we'll see more of this

I'm going to see what nvidia/pny have to say officially about it

Would be cool to hear your findings. MacOSX-support for Quadro 5000 and 6000 would potentially be interesting as well.

As you say though, I wouldn't want to invest X-thousand $ finding the solution rendered useless by apple in a month or two. Also, it would be interesting to know how wide the support is in terms of OpenCL, OpenGL, Quartz and of course CUDA acceleration.

So we have run more tests, this time without a Cubix expansion, and with just a GT120/Mac and a GTX570/PC inside a Mac Pro.

At HD, we could 11 nodes of image blurs at 24fps.

In the Mac Pro, we also have the Red Rocket card and the Decklink card in the x4 PCI-E slots.

You should throw out dvd. Then you can connect the 6 pin - to molex using dvd power.

Thanks Mikhail, I'll give it a look.
The thing is I still make dvds from time to time, might be going with an external dvd if the 570 really gives me more realtime power.

What i did with my 470, i just "merged" 2 cables in the middle.

So generally you have black wires and yellow wires going from one end to the other.

I i did cut one extra cable up and soldered 3 ends again together and
got one cable with extra power output.

Now i still have 2 gpu ports on motherboard but one splits half in the other end
and powers my 4000 and second slot for 470.

Yes.

With the Y cable i mentioned.

After installation ups failed :) but machine was working nice so i had to loose this ups unit
as its total power rating was to low. I have to see its numbers when i get to the office again.

In the end of the week i could make photos of the mentioned cable if interested.

I can not comment other gpus and power needs.

The GTX570 needs only 2 x 6-pin connectors, so is no different from a Q4800/GTX470 in that regard.

Quick question about the 4000 and 570.

I dont have a cubix but a 12 core with the 120/470 combo.

I have run into my first limitation while trying to render out 5K Epic i get a GPU error - I am told by the BMD team that I would need at least a quadro 4000 with 2GB vram as opposed to the 1280MB my 470 card has. I am grading off r3d obviously but need to render back at full resolution (a mix of 3k & 5k) at ProRes444 or HQ.

I can possibly borrow a friends 4000 tomorrow but first i want to be sure that it will be able to render out 5k ProRes files so as not to waste his time or mine. If it does that is great, BUT my other thinking here is to get a 570 card off ebay or locally here in NY if possible and upgrade my system to Lion in order to use the new drivers from nvidia on the pc version of the 570. I want to be sure I can use the cables my current 470 came with in order to connect properly to my 12-core. Most importantly I want to buy the 'best / beefiest' card I can right now for my 12-core non-cubix setup. Please advise.

Is this card below correct even, and if there is a higher / better card someone can recommend please advise as I am willing to upgrade my system to Lion to get a beefy card in there (i.e. 580)? Also, should i swap my 120 for something else or am i fine - i would need a small card like the 120 to fit in my box).

is the 590 supported ?

the 590 have quite more RAM than the 580 and if i recall correctly for higher resolution project the ram of the GPU is essential (right?)

so is the 590 supported by this new nvidia driver?

The card is supported. Resolve shows an error box, and the Mac pro power supply can't handle the 590.

Yes other than the error box it does seem to work. It shows up as two seperate gpus and functions as such. Performance for single gpu is on par with 570. But multitask functions like nr kick on the second gpu and perform better. I would recommend the 580 as you get better real world performance. Or better yet wait for 680.

Has anyone had a chance to test out one of those ASUS MARS II cards with Resolve? Two 580s on one PCI-E slot. 1024 CUDA cores, 3GB RAM, 384 GB/s memory bandwidth? It could free up some slots...or even dual MARS II cards for quad processors using only two slots?

Could be insane.

There would be power issues with MacPro. This would only work in cubix, where slots aren't such an issue.
