Looking for inspiration : sports documentaries
on May 25, 2013 at 5:10:29 pm

Hello all,

I'm looking for suggestions for great sports documentaries. Either tv or feature. In particular I'm interested in telling the stories of individuals participating within a game. So not just a synopsis of the key moments on the field, but the journeys of players, ideally mic'd up players.

So I guess that means less historic, well known moments In Sports history, but players in small time, niche sports or leagues. I'm working on such a project right now and could use a bit of inspiration so please, bring it on.

Thanks,
Chris

A doc I watched recently that comes to mind is Truth in 24 II: Every Second Counts. It's on Netflix Instant right now and it chronicles Audi's win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans a few years ago.

A narrated doc, it explores the journey of the drivers, the engineering team, the season leading up to the race, and the race itself.

I would check out Boys of Bonneville which is on Netflix instant streaming. It's a racing documentary but delves much deeper and does a great job of telling an inspirational story.

Check out:

- Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001)
- Riding Giants (2004)
- Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos (2006)

Same editor, great energy and style. They're not hero's journeys, but there is a little character development and personal growth in these.

Dogtown and Z-boys is amazing (and I've never been into skate culture). That's a doc I watched and it impacted what I wanted to accomplish professionally. Riding Giants is very good too (coming from a non-surfer). Once in a Lifetime, while good, is the weakest of the three as it deals more with a situation than with people involved in that situation, IMO.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm going to try to find time to watch a few of these over the weekend.
