Suggestions for lower third GFX at the same time as subtitles.
on Feb 1, 2012 at 3:36:05 pm

I'm editing a piece that I shot in the Philippines. The Filipino spoken English, with some strong dialects, will be very hard for my audience to understand. Any suggestions for handling lower third GFX and sub-titles at the same time? Don't want it to get too cluttered.

Thanks,
Paul

You could use the alternate position for subtitles, at the top of the screen. Or shrink the screen size and move it up, creating a new, "lower", lower-third space for just the captioning. That second idea is what I'd do.

Mark,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm never a fan of the subtitles at the top of the screen. I'm thinking of putting the talking heads in a "shrunken frame box," either screen left or right, and putting a graphic in the black space opposite the box...then room for subtitles at the bottom.

Thanks,

One last thought; Leave it as-is, and whenever you get to a section where there is a lower third, do a little DVE squeeze, like a lady lifting her skirt just a little bit, and only for the duration of the lower third, then let it stretch back to full screen after the lower third is done. Unless this program has a ton of lower thirds, it may be a good compromise?

[Mark Suszko] "do a little DVE squeeze, like a lady lifting her skirt just a little bit"

has to be one of the best and most accurate analogies i have read in a long time!
Good one, Mark.

I like the idea, as well as the analogy. Thanks Mark.
