For a client annual meeting we are shooting an opening video on HDTV 1920x1080i, and they are now asking will we be able to provide still shots of a high enough resolution to go into their annual report. The last shoot they did used a RED so of course they were able to take stills from that. Will the HD be adequate? I'm thinking not but would like confirmation.

Depends how big a picture they want the still to be, but HD footage absolutely will make a decent 5x7 print at least, IMO. If they want to make a billboard out of it, then the issue is less clear.

Thanks, it is always good to get confirmation from someone else.

Grabbing a clean frame from an interlaced source can be tricky if there is a lot of motion going on so make sure to keep an eye out for interlacing artifacts when making your selections.

When a client asks for a still from video, I immediately tell them the maximum print size, so they know what the expectations are. For an average 8.5x11 printed page, photos, like in a magazine article, are not more than 1/3 to 1/4 of the page, so you can get away with just about any image.
If dealing with a printer, you may get flagged as low resolution in pre-flight, because something from video will likely be between 72 and 200 ppi - but you can override these warnings.
Make sure you deinterlace interlaced stills. Sometimes there is not perfect motion-free frame to use, and you need to do some creative Photoshop work to make a still frame better.
