How to get the look of the super-8 frame
on Apr 1, 2010 at 2:41:13 am

Hey

I just got some super-8 footage processed and transferred but they cropped out the frame! And I really wanted that look for the film. I've been scouring the internet looking for filter or something but no luck.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get the stylized frame back with out it looking like added effect.

I'm using Premiere CS4.

Thanks.

There are probably some samples on Artbeats and other stock footage companies of super-eight leader and blank film runs. You could buy a few seconds and loop it. But really all you need is one frame of some transfer and photoshop as a basis to craft your own matte. Not even that; last time I did this in FCP, I just made a round-corneed matte using the crop controls and did a "screen" transfer mode and voila, fake super-8 transfer. Nattress has some awesome plug-ins that add the proper strobing, variable gate gunk, and gate weave, etc. to finish the illusion, and that's what I used.

Marks right, take a look at Revostock.com or istockphoto.com

Download these project files and grab the clip "Real_8mm_Film".

Use composite modes to place over your footage and scale to taste.
