How did John Gilroy do this cool transition on NARC?

Hey guys,

I recently re-watched Joe Carnahan's gritty cop-thriller "Narc" which was edited by John Gilroy. I was so impressed with the editing, that I decided to have a frame-by-frame look. I stumbled over this transition-effect during the opening sequence and I have no idea how he did it:

It looks like it is a composite mode or something. It's definitely not a dissolve since only parts of the images are fully visible and the next image seems to shine through only in dark parts of the previous frame.

What do you guys think? Is it a plug-in? Is it a standard effect in AVID or FCP? (I'm pretty sure they used AVID, though). Did they do it in After Effects.

Thanks for your responses!

Looks like a composite mode. Maybe "Lighten" or "Screen". The key is that the darks that are common to both shots are what come through. Then it is just a few frame dissolve on top of that.

Thank you, Terry. I have to try that out. The still frames don't really bring across how amazing it looks in the movie.

The DVD special features discusses this scene, however if I remember correctly, all they said was that it was a series of 3 very quick dissolves....but there denfinately appears to be mainpulation of the transfer modes as you both pointed out...

Their reasoning was to keep a steady pace throughout the whole chase...

not sure if any of this helps. I just wanted to reply since this is one of my all-time favorite flicks eventhough I think the transition in question was a lil sloppy IMO...lol...I was never impressed with it, but understood the reasoning behind it.

Thanks for responding. I have to check out those special features now. Funny that you consider this transition sloppy. LOL.
