Better Dissolves

Im working in FCP and all my dissolves seem to be very flat and even. I've noticed on a lot of professional trailers (like the new Texas Chainsaw Masssacre) the dissolves seem to effect the likes and darks differently. Sort of like film developing. How can I emulate this?

Those dissolves are made in the film lab using the same old fashioned optical/chemical process that's been in use for over a century.

The easiest way to fake this in FCP is to use a plugin like Nattress Film Effects: http://www.nattress.com/Products/filmeffects/filmeffects.htm

I checked out those filters from Nattress. Pretty good but are the compatible with DVCPROHD and 1080 24p?

Of course they are.

try Effects>Dissolve>additive dissolve.

Heck, try ALL the alternate dissolves FCP offers. Learn that they all give a different "feel". As does where you place the start of the dissolve, at the beginning or the middle.

For something more subtle [and still simple], try using a Gradient Dissolve and playing around with the gradient you use.

Works nicely for me when I want to control what gets wiped off and on the screen.
