HELP-cover letter for editing position-FAST
on Aug 24, 2005 at 7:56:43 pm

Ive been editing for about 4 years and Im trying to move into a full time editing/graphics position. I need to know how to write a cover letter that will at least get my resume looked at- and hopefully an interview!

Just to let you know where im coming from - im a recent graduate from the art institute of dallas Vid. Prod. (almost out for 1 year) and im a good editor and motion graphics designer. This is an automotive commercial spot company.

Any info that full time editors could give me now would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Actually it is. I still havent been able to find a website or any information about the company online. I'd really like to see what kind of work they've done so far.

The reason I'm posting this is because the last time (about 4 or 5 months ago) I applied for a motion graphics position with them I never heard anything back. This time (with a new demo) I want to send a professional cover letter with my resume- Instead of just relying on the -apply here- function on the site.

Any help is appreciated

Sell yourself. This company really needs to hire you because...but don't try to sound pompous. There is a fine line.

List your skills, your talents and greatest accomplishments. Sure a resume can give a date and a project, but you need to say stff like "creative storyteller" if you are an editor, or "inventive graphic designer who knows how to grab your attention."

For example:

Dear Mr. Bossman,

My name is Shane Ross and I believe that I will be a valuable asset to your company. I am a talented editor with a keen sense of storytelling. I can follow a narrative script and find the best performance and enchance the story, and I am skilled with finidng the sotry hidden in the pile of interview tapes of a documentary project. I have experience cutting drama and comedy, as well as documentary and reality.

I have experience with the Avid Media Composer non-linear editing system as well as Final Cut Pro and Media 100. I am a skilled compositor using After Effects and Motion to enchance graphics and titles to add production value to the project. I have been editing for 5 years, having assisted for 3 years and online edited for 2 years prior.

Most recently I completed a drama series for Nickelodeon that will air in January, and currently am finishing up a series of documentaries on the science of the bible for National Geographic.

The main skill I bring to the table is the ability to tell the story, and tell it well. By why take my word for it? Let my work speak for itself by watching my enclosed demo reel.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your consideration.

Shane Ross.

If you cut and paste this I will find you and forcefully extract $10 from your wallet...
