questions about a broadcast monitor
on Apr 26, 2005 at 5:27:09 am

hey guys, I got a couple questions,

1. Im looking for a good broadcast monitor. It must have a blue only switch. My budget is $500 or less. I will be doing heavy color correcting on it (from inside the avid). What would you recommend?

2. How do I hook this thing up to my graphics card? What kinda cable? I have an ATI radeon 9600. I am already using it for dual monitors. But there is an SVID out on it.

I am using Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.1.2. I know avid only certifies Nvida cards for the software, but I had the card before I got the program.

I am use to going firewire to my camera then rca to tv. I really dont want to continue doing this method for the broadcast monitor. Do I need an Nvida graphics card? If so which can you recommend?

Thanks alot for your time!

I'm afraid you won't find a true NTSC broadcast monitor in your price range. A quick Google brought up a used 14" Sony for $1200. It just came off lease. Used monitors are your best bet but I'd check them over personally to get one that's truly pristine. You are right to look for an ntsc monitor but you'd be taking video out through a video card that has a bnc composite connector into the bnc connector on the monitor.

yea,

I'v seen that the monitors that actually have sync, blue only, ect. range in a price that is way over my budget. Im just gonna go with a decent one in my price range and take real care calibrating it.

thanks

Good place to ask this question. So if I get a regular tv with s-video and plug it into my graphics card, is the picture going to at least be clear? I tried once getting a modulator that went s-video to the modulator, out through cable into a regular t.v. and the picture was almost unrecognizable.

Try a used monitor at http://www.bcs.tv

You might be able find something close to $600, such as a Sony PVM or Panasonic 13-14" broadcast series. I sold my PVM-14" for $600 almost a year ago.

Also try eBay. Again, look for a Sony PVM series monitor.

I did as Walter suggests above and bought a used PVM 1354Q for just over $400 on eBay. The price savings was worth the risk for me at this stage. At some point when the work justifies it I'll invest in a multi-format monitor, but for now I know I can trust this monitor for NTSC color correction.

Regards,

Tom
