I'm sure we've discussed this before, but I found this video that does a great job covering a variety of different long shots.
What are your favorites, what else would you nominate? I would also nominate the opening shot from Children of Men and Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger. This is a great one to read about. Filmed before the stedi-cam, they had to mount a track to the ceiling, then once outside attach it to a crane and then use a zoom and some other do-dads to try and hide the seam.
