The anime', not the director. This is a movie I would put in my list of 100 general films to watch. and in my top 20 animated films. What Blade Runner did for live action SF movie making, Akira did for anime'.
I've probably watched Akira twice in my life (I own it), but I don't think I remember much about it before the part when his freind starts to explode into a stadium sized blob of destruction (which is awesome, btw). Maybe enough time has passed for another viewing?
