Sundance?
on Jan 16, 2013 at 11:40:07 pm

Lots of awards show and 2012 recap activity on this forum, so I thought I'd see if anyone is following Sundance very closely this year? It's always a fun time..get in ahead of the game so when a movie blows up and gets a wide release and Oscar nominations this time next year, you can say you were there from the beginning! I tried to do that last year, but it's hard to track down the films for a long time in Indianapolis unfortunately.

Anyway, the film I'm MOST excited about is definitely Shane Carruth's Upstream Color. This guy is crazy..director, writer, editor, DP, composer, and GREAT AT ALL OF IT. The theatrical trailer is beyond gorgeous and perfectly edited. I read he's self-distributing the film so I'm hoping I don't end up having to wait until next winter to find a limited engagement in my city. Apple has the trailer if you haven't seen it.

I saw that Sundance is also live streaming some of the events that are taking place in Park City which is pretty nifty. One that popped out to me that's happening this Saturday night is a Q&A with Robert Rodriguez about El Mariachi, the film he made for $7k and wrote a book about (Rebel without a Crew, REALLY interesting read).

And a Sundance short film that was posted online that everyone should check out because it is amazing - "Catnip: Egress to Oblivion?"

Fine, I'll talk to myself!

Since the Vimeo Catnip video is private, here's a YouTube embed!

Spin has a list of 25 anticipated films which is nifty and reminded me of another film I'm looking forward to:

"There's Joseph Gordon-Levitt's feature directorial debut, Don Jon's Addiction, about a porn enthusiast (JGL himself) looking for a more satisfying sex life."

I've never been that intrigued by Sundance, because I live in Chicago and rarely travel... But I do understand the importance of it, and recognize the amount of great films that have debuted there in the past, and will no doubt debut there this year...

THAT BEING SAID, I'm most interested in the reaction to the Ashton Kucther / Steve Jobs movie, and the Amanda Seyfried / Linda Lovelace movie, because they HAVE to be train wrecks and I would like someone to confirm this for me, haha.

But in all seriousness, the movie I would be first in line ot see is Wrong Cops, a new film by the guy who made Rubber (which as I'm sure you remember, was a great film about a car tire that makes people's heads explode). Wrong Cops stars Marilyn Manson as a teenager in a crime film. That's all I need to hear.

Also, I liked 2 and 1/2 segments of the horror anthology film VHS, and the sequel S-VHS is debuting as Sundance this year, and I'll be checking it out whenever it comes my way. Looks kinda intense!

I've gotta look more closely at Sundance. To be honest, I've always thought of this as a marketplace festival -- ie, the object of the game is to get picked up, so a distribution deal is really the only "prize" worth having. Partly true, but also obviously not fair. I'm still gonna be more interested in the audience prizes than the juried ones.

Toronto is a festival to talk about next year. Despite how sneaking those Canadians are -- masquerading as Americans in our TV shows and movies -- the audience is quite good at picking unlikely movies for Oscar's Best Picture. It's one reason studios show movies well before they open in the US. For example, Toronto's audience prize went to King's Speech long before there was any buzz about it whatsoever (sorry Scott), indeed, before it opened in the US at all. This year, they picked Silver Linings Playbook, so who knows.

The Kutcher/Jobs piece looks ridiculous. That's one I'm going to mock relentlessly without ever bothering to see. LOL

Part of the allure for me with Sundance IS the marketplace feeling of it, as I'm always intrigued by the business of distribution and selling films. Which is why I'm extra interested in Carruth's self-distribution. I read an article...somewhere..this morning about his meticulous marketing plan for releasing his film, getting it screened, meeting the right people...sounds exhausting and I want nothing to do with it, but I'll gladly watch others try it.

I like the hope and desperation of the whole thing, basically.

[Scott Roberts] "the Amanda Seyfried / Linda Lovelace movie"

I didn't know they were doing that until I saw a photo this morning. What the f? The Jobs film is...bizarrely interesting. I can't imagine Kutcher makes a good Jobs beyond simply looking like him. But did you see who they cast as Woz? It's like they didn't even TRY.

[Kylee Wall] " But did you see who they cast as Woz? It's like they didn't even TRY."

As long as they bring it more or less current and Kathy Griffin gets to play herself, I'm okay. LOL

I just IMDb'd it to see who's actually playing Wozniak and saw: 11 producers! I don't think of that as a good sign. And one dude gets credit as both Producer AND Executive Producer. Isn't that like being president AND vice president? Goofy.

I'm kinda curious whether people find Ashton an upgrade from Noah Wyle. Not curious enough to see it or anything. LOL

I agree about finding the business of the thing interesting (obviously). I track the hell outta that stuff. I also pay ridiculous attention to things like grosses and per screen averages, domestic vs. international box office, etc. Distribution deals are awesome, basically watching somebody place their bets on a roulette table where they have some small amount of control over the wheel...but so does everybody else at the table. LOL

Annoying stuff at Sundance: Redford complains that there are too many film festivals, says he wouldn't start Sundance in a world with so many of 'em (disingenuous dick: "It disturbs me how much I've encouraged so many people"), and the Guardian complains that there are too many FILMS because there are too many film students, and it's destroying the ability of films to find audiences or make money. They're not disingenuous. They're just dicks. http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/sundance-roundup

HILARIOUS coverage, partly of movies at Sundance, but even better, covering the COVERAGE of Sundance. Two great articles from one of my favorite sites on the web.

Sundance Diary, Part 1: A Humbling in Park City, a Taste of the Festival Li...

Sundance Diary, Part 2: Adrian Grenier's Hair, a Daring Brush With Death, a...

And some good coverage of actual movies at Huffington Post...although it turns out that covering Sundance may by definition HAVE to include meta-coverage.

The Sundance Diaries articles were the most worthwhile coverage I've read so far.

To add to this thread, seems I'll get to see Don Jon's Addiction in a wider release since it got a massive deal. That's cool to see the record or near-record-breaking deals going down. I'm also interested in The Way, Way Back which sounds extremely interesting (co-written by Jim Rash, the crazy Dean on Community who also won an Oscar for The Descendants) but released a so-so preview clip.

And my personal interest in Upstream Color is only growing, as the Twitter sentiment to the film is basically gibberish and moaning, in a good way. I was warned NOT to read ANY reviews of the film, so I'm passing it along to you all: if you're interested or intrigued, stay away from reviews.

Heya Kylee!

Okay sure -- I assume this is kind of a dorky move, but I wanted to thank you not only for posting my Catnip short (twice!), but also for bringing me out of the shadows on my favorite "I shall lurk around here and absorb copious amounts of information without ever creating an account and contributing myself" site.

Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks again!

Hey Jason, I'm glad to lure you out and meet you. Congratulations on your Audience Award at Sundance. I was watching the live stream of the awards and clapped like a loser at my screen in the dark when you won.

You should stick around this forum a bit because we appear to have the same sense of humor.

Congrats again on the award but most of all, congrats on your brand new COW account!
