This billboard is in Times Square - thought I'd share. I had forgotten that the first movie comes out this December..

3D - 48fps (maybe) - another 6-8 hours of Middle Earth adventure - sign me up.

I am imagining the discussions in the marketing department over the poster.

"There's no hot-looking girls on it".

"Total sausage-fest"

"These are all dwarves, the thing is titled "The Hobbit", where's the flipping HOBBIT!?!?"

"There's no NAME talent in this picture, I can't sell that."

"It's not very diverse, can't one of them be black?"

"Is this a comedy?"

"You have a movie with a killer dragon, and you show me Snow White's fan club?!??

"These guys all look old; you understand what the major movie demographic is these days, right?"

"Can you put some weapons in their hands at least?"

"This image tested poorly in Florida; can we re-shoot it more sexy?"

[Mark Suszko] "

Speaking of sausage...

Denny's is capitalizing on The Hobbit craze too. Bombur's mouth is watering.

Wow. Billboards in NY, advertisements on Denny's menus. This marketing campaign is going after EVERYBODY isn't it?

[Jeff Breuer] "This marketing campaign is going after EVERYBODY isn't it?"

It really has to. For all that LOTR made a mint, the latest saga had a saga of its own leading to production, a lot of it over money. Each of the Hobbit movies has a budget bigger than all three of the LOTR movies combined -- and the third Hobbit movie that PJ has been talking about doesn't even have a budget yet! Sure, he's shot everything, but there's plenty of other work left to do, and no plans to pay for it yet.

I'm sure it will happen, even if it has to wait until profits can be taken from the first one....oh yeah, except no movies ever made have shown a profit. When King Kong went $20m over budget, Peter kicked in half.

This means that the Hobbitses have to make the same amount of money as LOTR just to break even. That's a good enough bet that some folks have been willing to take it so far. Each of the three movies built on each other - the first took in $870-ish million, and the third crossed the $1B mark...but none of that happened by leaving any marketing opportunity on the table.

Except, as with the Denny's menu, marketing opportunities that actually take place on tables.
