Two Awesome Breaking Bad Videos
on Feb 1, 2012 at 5:35:55 pm

Here are two videos I've seen in the last couple of days about one of the best shows on TV, Breaking Bad. If you haven't gotten through the end of season 4 yet, I now warn you of plenty of spoilers ahead.

Breaking Bad + Ecstasy of Gold = Amazing!

And here's a funny look at the show as an old school RPG video game (mainly spoofing Final Fantasy III for SNES). Here's the link if the embed doesn't work:

What's the music used in the first, tribute montage?

It's a remix of Ennio Morricone's "Ecstasy of Gold" from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. The specific remix? I don't know...!

Scott-
Thanks for the link. Two things:

It is a cool look back at what is clearly one of, if not THE, most interesting shows on television. For those of us who've seen it all, it's great reminder of some of the elements from a great show -- but potentially a SERIOUS spoiler for anyone who's only seen some of the series. (To anyone who hasn't watched the whole 4 seasons of Breaking Bad, do so FIRST and don't let this tease in any way diminish your watching of the actual show. You've now been warned repeatedly.)

Secondly, other than as a tease, for which there is arguably a place in the marketing of a show, what's the point of these pieces? They are certainly great editing, working from great material, but what do they do to advance the story aspects of the series? Breaking Bad can be frenetic in places, but it's not the continual wham-bam-action-slam dance music depicted in these trailers. It is one of the most cerebral shows EVER on commercial TV, but little of that is conveyed.

[Nick Griffin] "Secondly, other than as a tease, for which there is arguably a place in the marketing of a show, what's the point of these pieces?"

Well, these aren't exactly marketing videos. In fact (and I may be wrong), I doubt the first one even had consent from AMC to do it, it's just a great fan video that probably falls under fair use somehow. The point of the videos are that they are fun tributes to a show that these people really love. It's along the lines of a more technologically advanced version of a fan in the 1960s painting an interpretive picture of The Beatles.

<a href="http://i1.creativecow.net/u/150514/the_beatles_by_arbeeroro.jpg"><img src="//i1.creativecow.net/u/150514/the_beatles_by_arbeeroro.jpg" border="0" /></a>

Does that advance anyone's thought of The Beatles music? Or add anything to it? Not really, in my opinion. And if it does, it adds about as much to The Beatles as these videos do to Breaking Bad. NOW, as negative as that sounds, I fully support all fan made creations of things people love, as they are personal interpretations of loved art.

To get more specific on the point of these videos... The first one, to me, was a brilliantly short representation of the entire show, albeit in a different style and pacing, as you noted. That shouldn't really matter, though, as it's just some dude's interpretation of what he loves about the show. If anything, it made me want to watch the show all over again, it made me feel happy that I had experienced this show at all. It's not for newcomers, it's a video for people who already love Breaking Bad. And if you're familiar with the specific song used in the video ("Ecstasy of Gold" from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), it's a nice little related touch. The scene in Good/Bad/Ugly where the song is used is during Tuco's desperate attempt to find treasure in a graveyard, which could be related to Breaking Bad much in the similar vein of Walt's desperate attempts to get money. Plus, it's a fun video.

The second one, in addition to being a neat, short, linear recap to the entire series in a quick amount of time, is probably more valuable as a spoof of that era of video games than it even is for Breaking Bad. I don't know how to put that in a different way; the second video is probably only going to really hit with people who played Super Nintendo RPGs in the 1990s. That being said, the video iss still a clever way to provide commentary on the show, such as illustrating Jesse's overuse of the word "b*tch", Walt running out of lies for his wife, etc. Plus, it's a fun video.

OK, now I get it. These are done by a fan, not AMC's marketing department. At the very least these are great portfolio pieces for the editor -- someone who really has a place cutting trailers.

Agreed: it works very well as a portfolio piece for an editor.
