Boardwalk Empire VFX Reel

Much like I posted a while ago showing off the awesome (mostly scenery) VFX reel for HBO's Game of Thrones:

Here is the same effects reel concept, but this time with HBO's Boardwalk Empire. I could watch cool VFX videos like these all day for every show ever created.

Agreed; I had to stop and replay each scene a number of times to see everything they put into it. Really remarkable. Can't get enough of this stuff, or of tutorials on how to do some of it yourself. I was just about to post this link here last night myself; we share some similar tastes:-)

That's awesome. And not that I've ever seen it, but who knew Ugly Betty was such an effects heavy show?

Would inserting a green or blue object in the frame work instead of building a green or blue backdrop on location or in a studio?

You mean like painting a box on the set green? Sure, I guess, if it's lit well enough.

No, I mean placing a green or blue square or what ever on any part of the image in post and then keying.

Love this stuff. There is a similar one for Game of Thrones if you search this forum.

The Boardwalk Empire boardwalk set is easily visible on google maps:

It is amazing that they do effects like this for tv series work, and the average viewer would never know some of these shots are effects.

Here's a video of the set construction - a set that had to be previsualized to make sure they could do the set extensions in post

Richard - if you want to key out part of a shot in which there is no movement of actors, you can simply crop and accomplish the same thing. Generally you use a blue or green screen on set for areas that actors or moving objects will cross in front of. Anything beyond the area of action you just crop out or comp over.

Thanks Scott, cool video. It is amazing to me how many vfx shot are done without green screen screens and without locking down the camera. We have come a long way since the 90's. Thank you Jurassic Park!
