A while back Scott posted the opening credits for Enter the Void and we had a great discussion about good title opening sequences. Here is a video about Movie title sequences throughout history leading up to Enter the Void. Good stuff.
I liked that a lot, covered a long time period in a pretty short duration. And while in some way, everything steals from something else, this video made title design feel like more of an evolution than anything else. At least to me.
The early part of that sequence gave me impressions of the titles imitating the title cards on vaudville stages, then the illuminated "spectacular" electric signs of Broadway, then a change in direction towards design principles of paper-based graphic art and design: posters, magazine ads, that kind of thing.
Of course, one entire section of the thing really belongs to one genius designer: SAUL BASS. Either by direct creation, or by someone inspired by or imitating Bass.
