I haven't seen any comment about this here, and I haven't seen any comments on the article from some of the forum's heavy posters, so here's a story for you to check out:

Remarkable look at the technology of restoration, for one of the small handful of most important movies made in my lifetime (or so sez I).

Check it out, lemme know what you think...

I have tickets to see this at 8 pm on Saturday, I was gonna wait until I saw it for myself before I said anything! :)

I'm very excited!! I wish/hope they do this for a lot of other classic movies too.

We expect a full, full FULL report.

Sony's last effort along these lines was Bridge on the River Kwai last October or November. Next up: Guns of Navarrone.

Well, that was just cool. Just plain cool. I was actually surprised that not that many people showed up, maybe only two dozen. But that kind of helped the atmosphere I guess, twenty people (who looked about as scummy as I normally do) spread out in a big theater, watching a seedy classic movie from the 70s. The scenes where Travis is sitting in the porno theater felt oddly relatable at the time, haha.

The 4K remaster was fantastic, kudos to the whole team that did that. With the clean-up, in addition to seeing it on a huge screen, I was noticing little details in the shots I've never seen before on my crappy DVD version. And after reading the article by Debra Kaufman, it's incredible the effort that went into restoring such a great movie. And it's spectacular that they even considered doing this. I'm definitely looking forward to the Blu-ray release next month, so I can enjoy this enhanced version as much as I want.

But it didn't hit me until the next morning just how awesome it was to see Taxi Driver in theaters. It's one of my favorite movies, from one of my favorite directors, and (since it was released 9 years before I was born) never having seen it in a theater, it really did make a difference. Like it felt as if I was watching something special (probably because I was...!). I wish they could just play other awesome classics like this every weekend, I don't even need it to be restored. Just play Jaws on the big screen! Do it already! I wish I was rich, I would buy a theater and run it right into the ground by opting to screen Serpico instead of Transformers!

The big local theater in my State played a bunch of "classic" movies a few years ago. It was real fun to see "Rear Window", "Top Gun (Although I could have seen it in the theater I never did)" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" on the big screen. They where dirty and not restored, but it was fun to see them big.
