Ejecting XDCAM HD Discs Crashes Mac
on May 12, 2014 at 1:54:16 pm

Ejecting XDCAM HD Optical Discs from my mac randomly crashes the computer.

I've tried ejecting from XDCAM Transfer, Finder, and directly from PDW-F30 XDCAM Deck and they all cause Mac to crash on about every 8th Disc. This has also happened to colleague when ejecting from Camera PDW-F330. I've upgraded to the latest firmware and can only assume it is a Mavericks issue (I know, I shouldn't be on Mavericks but I am). Any ideas?

Specs:
Mac Pro Mid 2012
Mavericks 10.9.2
64 GB RAM
2x2.4 GHz 6-core
FCP 7
Plenty of hard drive space on OS and RAID
XDCAM Transfer 2.13.0

Are you running the latest FAM driver and V2 of the deck software?

Ian,
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I'm using V2 of the Deck Software and FAM Driver V2_3_2

Are you getting kernel panics? The latest FAM is qualified for Mavericks and we have not seen any major issues. Can you uninstall/reinstall the FAM driver?

Ian, I uninstalled and reinstalled the FAM Driver. I then popped in and out a few discs and it happened again! My screens go black and then a few seconds later, the computer restarts stating: "Your computer restarted because of a problem." I've run Disk Utility and everything checks out okay.

Open Console and take a look at the crash thread in your system log. There may be some clues there. I cannot make the same behavior occur on my Mavericks partition here.

Ian, I've never looked at Console before and don't understand what it all means. Below is the last minute of data before the crash.

Are you seeing this with multiple discs? Do you see any difference if XDCAM Transfer is not running and accessing files? I.e. boot, load/eject discs multiple times, do you still get the kernel panic?

Ian, Yes this is happening with multiple discs. It also happens without XDCAM Transfer open and just ejecting from Finder. It's like playing Russian Roulette-it can happen with any disc, at anytime, no matter how I eject it or what else is open or closed.

Do you have another Firewire XDCAM device? Would like to be able to rule out the deck if possible.

Ian, Yes it's also happening when going directly from the Camera PDWF330L. I am going to borrow a PDW-U1 Drive and see if there are any issues with that. It connects via USB while the other 2 devices connect via Firewire...I wonder if that makes any difference. I'll test that this afternoon and will write back with my results. Thanks again.

ok, that is good info. i am very curious to see if it happens with the drive since there is no FAM driver in that scenario. make sure you are running drive software version 5.

Ian, I've loaded and ejected about 75 discs using the PDW-U1 without a single shutdown. Yeah!!! Unfortunately, I have to give the drive back, as I was only borrowing it. It would appear to me that the problem is the FAM driver interacting with Mavericks. I never had this issue before Mavericks and now it has happened on one Mac Pro and two Mac Book Pros. And it has happened both with a deck and a camera as the source. All devices have the latest software and firmware. Any other thoughts?

I haven't been able to reproduce this. Will take a closer look at it here. Feel free to email me so we can document this and keep in touch. Ian dot Cook at am dot sony dot com.

Hi, did you all ever come to a conclusion over what was causing this? I'm having the exact same issue. We have the most up-to-date fam driver and it crashes roughly every 8 or 9 tapes. It definitely isn't consistent and it never crashes with the U1. Just thought I'd check. Thanks!
