PDW 700 Detail on or off

Just mucking around with settings.. with detail off.. the picture looks very soft to me? anyone else had this.. do you mostly shoot with detail ON..

Put it ON.. and set to -20

hi robin

well the detail setting aint there for nothing.
it's a correction for the aperture effect of the CCD.
there's one rule of thumb. BE GENTLE with it.
it can defintly make or break your picture quality.
try to keep it as subtile as possible.
a wise thing to do is to use a testchart with a quarter of a circel.
and make the halo as gentle as possible and symetrical in the horizontal and vertical domain. of coarse it's a matter of taste but i like the contours as narrow as possible.

Yes its not my camera.. I have a HDX900.. there was alot of discussion in the archives about this detail setting on the 700.One of the BBC guys who alot of people copy, had said detail off,although this was actually a setting for one particular shoot.

But it did seem very soft with detail off,I didnt have time with charts etc,but had a good monitor at home.
It seemed alot of people had gone with -20.. esp in NZ it seemed they had be advised this was a good general setting by Sony reps..
